My Mission: Puppy - How small can I get it?

#1 Post by flamesage »

Ok, my mission for this weekend is to hurl my puppy out the window, and get a new one. I fed my previous one way too much puppy chow. =P

And I wish to include the following

INCLUDE
Icewm
Monkey-WS
Abi-word
Gxine
Gaim
GIMP
timidity
Slyspheed
xdiskusage

WANT TO DELETE
[EDIT: Basicly, ANYTHING I didn't include except for absolutely nesessary files]

[Here are a few I thought up of deleting, but basicly I want to delete everything that I havn't listed up there..]
Mozilla (everything of mozilla)
SMM email prefilter
Every other Multimedia thing (I don't need CD players or burners, just gxine)
Dillo
All other text editors except abi-word
EVERY PAINT PROGRAM uninstalled! (replaced with GIMP)

What would be the best way to do this?
Is there something with JUST firefox and ONE windows manager installed on it? Where I can just build on?

I looked at Puppy Unleashed, but it looks danagerous and hard!

Dillo has no use to me!
It is slow, and lacking features.

(And that wasn't a very approperate post. :x )

One letter does it all - it must be DILLO (the tiny browser)

Please correct it, else Puppy get listed in XXX searches :D

Flash has listed this in the beginner's index (sticky post):

Um....
How would I go about uninstalling the stuff that I don't want, instead of starting back over?
(can I do this?)

Deleting

Deleting the stuff must be the simplest procedure. As to which stuff to delete, you can begin looking at Barry's help file as well as the "How Puppy Works" section of the Puppy website.

Hmmmmmm.

Would I be better just to go bareboned? (That doesn't sound very good for my puppy though.)

Like, I looked at the wiki barebone page, but what programs does it exactly include?

don't forget that gaim depends on certain libs included with mozilla.

How to do it ?

Experiment, make notes of what works and what doesn't and do a little bit at a time.

And Mr flamesage........how about a bit of thanks when people help you......

I've noticed alot of how's but very few thanks in threads started by you, and to me THAT is more inapproperate than a cheeky post.

And instead of deleting something immediately, just rename it or move it somewhere where it won't be searched for. Then you can see if it still works, and if it doesn't, just put it back. Moving would probably be the easiest because you wouldn't have to change its name and rename it, but you could add the same prefix to anything you change then just use wildcard searches to rename it all back or delete it all. Whatever works for you.
