Standard swap into my kernel test LxPupSc 20.01 install in my 'Experimental' directory, a bump from 5.4.6. Absolutely nothing to report on the initial runs, either quirks or changes in normal use from the 5.4.6 install.

Cheers,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

+10 bumped to +12 in my 'experimental' LxPupSc 20.01 install on the i5 based Fujitsu S761. All system level checks good, video FPS and mem/SSD throughput good, idle CPU and mem use remain excellent. Normal use, just web'n'taxes, unchanged from 5.4.10 and is fine. Mitigation (with current intel microcode loaded) shows:

Code: Select all

itlb_multihit:KVM: Vulnerable
l1tf:Mitigation: PTE Inversion
mds:Mitigation: Clear CPU buffers; SMT vulnerable
meltdown:Mitigation: PTI
spec_store_bypass:Mitigation: Speculative Store Bypass disabled via prctl and seccomp
swapgs barriers and __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2:Mitigation: Full generic retpoline, IBPB: conditional, IBRS_FW, STIBP: conditional, RSB filling
tsx_async_abort:Not affected
I see 13 but I'll skip it for 14 in an unbridled display of irrationality

Disappointing PCMANFM behaviour - if you rename a folder in filesystem root ( / ) folder, doesn't auto refresh - need to press F5 (had to google to find that out), or you can't access it once renamed. A workaround is to move folder to non- / folder, rename & move to / folder.

As promised, 5.4.12 bumped to 5.4.14 in my LxPupSc 20.01 install referenced above. Absolutely nothing to report on the updated install.

On a side note, I think I am finally going to have to update the Bay Trail desktop at the farm from X-Slacko 4.4 :!: No banking or business transactions at all on that but some sites, Craigslist in particular, no longer support some needed functions with the latest browsers I can run on that. I will use LxPupSc which I know and which runs well on that box but the trick is to keep the visuals and layout unchanged. Multiple users but the main user is both colorblind and not a computer person so I can't rock the boat much there. I'll check when I do it but last I looked the X-Slacko had been up for 2 yrs with no reboot so it sure isn't a lack of robustness that forces my hand :)

Cheers,

Kernel Release: 5.4.16-lxpup64
Build Date: Thu Jan 30 07:24:24 GMT 2020

Needs firmware (e.g. in fdrv)

From Here

5.5 is out but sticking with LTS 5.4 until aufs-5.5 appears.

BarryK has had problems with 5.4 and has reverted to 4.19 - anybody having problems with 5.4??

No problems with the 5.4 series here, I'm now running LxPupSc 20.01 with 5.4.16 and did quite a lot of configuration work the past few days involving file and dir copying transferring, general cleanup, symlink setups, etc. in that LxPup with 5.4.14 the last couple of days, both on the i5 based Fujitsu and the Bay Trail based desktop. Working on updating a couple of users. Internal SSD drive, external HDD, and USB thumb all used quite a bit. No lockups or unstable/odd behavior noted.

That said, I have only frugal Grub4Dos installs with savefiles, pretty generic ext2 and ext4 drives only and only run the 5.4 kernel in the 32b and 64b LxPups, both slackware derivs. I also don't routinely run firefox or any other moz based browser though in limited testing Cliqz also seems to run just fine in LxPup64 with no lockups seen under this kernel series.

Just my experience...

5.5.1 run for just over a day in LxPupSc 20.01 on the i5 based laptop (details on the installation above), then 5.5.2 swapped in. No system issues noted on either, actually one less warning in dmesg with 5.5.2, the urandom one. Video FPS was down by about 4% in 5.5.1 from the 5.4.x kernel series but is right back up in 5.5.2. Mitigation on this laptop (current intel microcode loaded early) is:

Code: Select all

itlb_multihit:KVM: Vulnerable
l1tf:Mitigation: PTE Inversion
mds:Mitigation: Clear CPU buffers; SMT vulnerable
meltdown:Mitigation: PTI
spec_store_bypass:Mitigation: Speculative Store Bypass disabled via prctl and seccomp
swapgs barriers and __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2:Mitigation: Full generic retpoline, IBPB: conditional, IBRS_FW, STIBP: conditional, RSB filling
tsx_async_abort:Not affected
Seems snappy and happy, running as my daily now just to get some time in on it. Tax time again so a fair amount of flogging files, simple spreadsheets, and pdfs in it. UpupEE is still my fav.

Update, 8 Feb evening: 2 days in, no muss, no fuss, no issues here.

Cheers,

Update to 20.01+2
Two days of heavy use now on 20.01+2, both in LxPupSc and LxPupSc64 on the i5 based Fujitsu S761. Frugal Grub4Dos installation on SSD as usual.
Used the 5.5.3 kernel for that time, and then swapped in the 5.5.4 kernel this AM. All systems Installed as RAM first on both and the usual system checks and initial setup done through SNS connection (I did use the 5.5.3 kernel for that) and then updated my +1 savefiles. All system level checks excellent, daily use just fine with lots of PDF filling, calculations, and Doc stuff done. Slimjet 24.0.5.0 from SFS the main browser used. QtWebBrowser portable ok in both 32b and 64b systems (loading the 32b compat SFS in the 64b) and Opera and Cliqz checked in the 64b pup. Nothing multimedia tested since 20.01+1. All in all good here, posting from the Slimjet in LxPupSc 20.01+2 now.

Thanks,

Kernel bumped to 5.5.6 in both 32b and 64b +2 installations of LxPupSc. All system level checks fine, daily use fine in both. About 4 days use to this morning, mostly in 64b this time. Still no multimedia checks done other than on-line stuff. The usual hardware. Looks good here.
