ipods on puppy

#1 Post by ecomoney »

Hi, have been trying to get an fourth generation apple ipod working with puppy and this...

http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html

I heard that puppy had gtk in it...but it apparently needs some dependencies...this is where I get a bit lost. It is apparently two package that have to be compiled...(?)

Would be great addition to puppy to have and to have a iPod dotpup!

I could have sworn I read something about ipod support in puppy2.

Although I can't find it now :(

http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/gtkpod-0.99-4.pup (2.5 MB)

compiled without "aac" -support, tell me if you need that.

**edit** Dotpup was updated with mp4/aac -libraries.

Mark,
AAC is the audio codec closely associated with MPEG4, QuickTime, and iPod. It would be good to have this compatibility. In Linux the FAAD libraries are needed to decode AAC, and FAAC libraries to encode. Get them from here - http://www.audiocoding.com/modules/mydownloads/
The latest FAAD version is FAAD2 CVS snapshot 15-09-2004.

It seems I did not need FAAD.
I used the mp4-libraries recommended in the documentation.
The dotpup is updated now, please tell me if it works.

I am building a laptop for a client who just got an ipod. I have been playing with gtkpod and got it working somehow but I am not sure what did the trick exactly.

I think it would be great to put an ipod package together for Puppy. Something that would not only sync the device but keep everything organized. A podcast downloader that shared the same library and recognized the extentions to add them from the web. I just found an ap called yamipod I am looking into. Something along these lines I am thinking?

Proprietry
Def: To pry money from ones wallet each time they want to upgrade.

It is not all that often though that we need to run the sofyware. I love the cheeper ones that you can just drag and drop files to. I myself would go for one of those first. The problem is I am building a new Puptop for a client and she just got this cute little nano 4gig ipod (shocking pink). Even though I have been able to transfer files to it it still refuses to play them, just sits there at position 0:00. I can play them fine with xmms from the interface.

More reading to do before the machine arrives for the window-ectomy.

Does anyone want to help see if we can get yamipod working in Puppy? I have a feeling it might be a great little program fot the new ipod nano's if I can figure out how to get past this error. The program seems to think there is not enough space on the main drive. Unfortunately I cant find any reference to this error and the program is a stand alone.

Well, no luck with either gtkpod or yamipod. I have no idea how I made it work once, (sort of) with gtkpod but I realised that the transfer never completed and that was why I could not play any mp3s on the ipod. I really do not want to build her a windows computer just so she can use this toy.

Help!

Do either of these programs work with the iPod shuffles? (1G/2G)

yes

Yes it should. But there is not to much in the way of cool features. For example dynamic play lists.

Also if you use it in GTKPod it is toast on your iTunes. ie you would have to reformat it to use it in iTunes again.

Altho i understand this thread is about Apple brand iPods, i just want to let those who may not know or are thinking about getting a portable mp3 player that Creative brand 'nano' portable mp3 players work great with puppy (1.09). There's no jazzy-bells-and-whistles interface but they are recognized and work just like USB flash drives. They then work the same way on Windows, or with the Windows-Creative 'jazzy' interface.

On a sad note, my girlfriend got me a 1g Samsung yp-u2j player that had a lot of nice features like a standard USB connection (no connection cable needed), a 15hr battery rechargable via a computer's usb etc. It looked great till on the first or second page of the manual it said "will not work without Windows Media Player 10". It failed to mention that insignificant detail on the ample space on the packaging. I dont want to be tied to a specific program of a specific OS. Puppy wouldn't even detect it (not Puppy's fault).

brad_chuck wrote: "Also if you use it in GTKPod it is toast on your iTunes. ie you would have to reformat it to use it in iTunes again" Maybe thats not a bad idea...just dont go back.

I had my girlfriend take the Samsung back. Now i use her spare Creative 'Nano' 'mp3er'.

Vote with your money.

I found a python script that works with Puppy for the iPod Shuffle. Mount your Shuffle as a USB Mass Storage device, and copy your music over. Put the .py file in the root directory of the iPod and execute it. When it's through, you can unmount the iPod and play your music!

Is there a good random music file choosing script for Puppy? I found one via Google, but it seems to require some tools that I haven't heard of before, which aren't installed on Puppy. I just want something that'll grab 500MB music and stick it on my shuffle.

It was mentioned here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 3972#93972

Well the source code is here http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1553
Someone who understands Python might be able to set it up in Puppy.

But QTFairUse is only needed to download music from the iTunes store.
And be aware that it uses copyright/copy-protection circumvention software.

You don't need this software to rip/convert your own music files from CD. Just use PBcdripper, it now supports AAC encoding.

I don't have an Ipod myself, but read of floola.com which has a software for linux, mac and win platforms for managing an ipod, and can be hosted on the ipod itself. Hope it helps.
