Thanks for your efforts to keep Puppy LInux current while computing continues to evolve. :D You probably won't hear from me much while details about operability are being investigated: I only know enough to cause confusion.

What I think nic007 is referring to is the discussion here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 64#1049764. I posted some thoughts to the end that thread.

I took a look at Ubuntu Fossa. My impression is that it will make far greater use of snapfiles, with a corresponding decrease in 'nuts & bolts' debs to be found in Ubuntu's repositories. Personally, I think AppImages are more in keeping with Puppies' philosophy: anyone can build, publish and maintain them. And see the discussion here, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 50#1054750. Unfortunately, Ubuntu has chosen to misuse its market share to curtail independent activity or (depending on your view point) poaching. If I'm correct, fleshing out Puppies with cutting edge applications will either require that we compile our own more often -- defeating one of (IMHO, the dominant) objectives of woof-- or that Puppies more closely adhere to the build philosophy of Ubuntu by including the mechanism to make use of snap packages.
they have snap and we have quickpet :)

There's something amiss with the jwm configuration. I don't know whether this is a known problem.

I noticed that using the Jwm desk manager to make the tray autohide had no effect. Also Vivaldi did not get added to the menu automatically, like it usually does.

Looking into it /etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc has a lot of sections missing. Like the part where I tell JWM to tile Rox windows.
hi lateadopter,

i think my old jwmconfigs are messing up woofce's newer configs, i'll hopefully fix this next build.
i'll also use the latest woofce so that rerwins fixes get in

hi bigpup,

do you have a bigger version of this one 1080p minimum but 4k would be good

This sort of thing probably originates in the fact that Canon no longer
supports Linux. With josejp2424 DpupBuster64 8.0 I see something
siimilar where just a small handfull of Canon printers are listed.

Of course, Phil's Thar, Xenial and Bionic 64 bit pups are all ok, showing
a huge # of Canon printers ... and functional CUPS.

I'd be happy to assist some expert with fixing the Canon printer problem(s)
(by testing). Where is rcrsn51 when you need him? :)

cups is missing a few things and will be fixed in the next build.
in the mean while you need to create these folders if they don't exist

Code: Select all

/var/run/cups
/var/cups/log
/var/cups/ppd
/var/cups/rss
/var/cache/cups/ppd
/var/cache/cups/rss
and install libgutenprint-common from the ppm
possibly a reboot after that

This worked to supply the huge selection of Canon printers. My printer did print ok in
spite of the odd and unusual error messages:

http://home.ptd.net/~artnpeg/canon2.png

I did this using the 4.9.58 kernel.

Have you installed cups-filters and printer-driver-gutenprint? I had to install many extra packages and deps to get working my brother laser printer.

No, I didn't have to do anything except what Phil posted (and use a different kernel
of course).

Few of things
  • users are broken (spot and finn). Can't login or run-as either
  • ListDD has one of the offending svg icons (others should be fixed in woof by now)
  • text editor crashes a bit
  • palemoon complaining about libxext and libxt (iirc) in xerrs.log
  • dunst complaining about libxdgbasedir (from dmesg - libxdgbasedir segfaults)
Not a bad alpha though, connects (broadcom wireless - brcmsmac driver) with sound on HP Pavillion g series i5 lappy

I got it here and cut it down to post in the forum.
http://www.widewallpapershd.info/animals/fossa.html
It is in several different resolutions.

Is it really that important? The wallpaper setter seems to do a good job of adjusting to fit and even very low resolution images, seem to look OK.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

run-as-spot is working for me with Vivaldi. Vivaldi put it's configuration files in /home/spot/.config/vivaldi. I copied a history file from my normal Bionicpup64 to "default" there. That saved me retyping all the URLs.

Have you installed any third party debs with a postinst script that breaks spot? I've had them before!

Hello 666philb

I'm down to the trivia now!

I installed libmpv & celluloid aka gnome-mpv. No missing dependencies or icons! But it or vaapi complain about missing amdgpu.ids, but not fatal. That comes from libdrm-common... Having installed that there are no errors and Celluloid is working OK at a first look.

There is a mysterious font in the adrv called arphic ukai.ttc. It's a 17MB collection of CJK fonts. Is it meant to be there, it's not in Bionicpup64?

Of course I tried with vivaldi at first and there is definitely an issue.

You changed kernels right? So I changed to 4.19.109 and voila! So it's a kernel issue, perhaps a bad config.
Thanks for the heads up :)

Code: Select all

root# ps -A | grep vivaldi
 9891 ? 00:00:12 vivaldi-bin
 9917 ? 00:00:00 vivaldi-bin

root# . /etc/DISTRO_SPECS
root# echo $DISTRO_FILE_PREFIX $DISTRO_VERSION
fossapup64 9.0
EDIT 0: darn, vivaldi crashes trying to upload screeny to the forum

Code: Select all

I don't install Vivaldi from the deb directly, because because it contains the Chromium postinst script which broke Puppy when I tried it long ago.

I extract the deb with xarchiver, copy over the symlink and desktop file. I edit the desktop file to add run-as-spot to the exec lines. I make an SFS of /opt/vivaldi like this:

Code: Select all

mksquashfs /mnt/home/temp/viv/opt /mnt/home/temp/vivaldi-3.0g.sfs -noappend -keep-as-directory -comp gzip

Vivaldi Downloader (forum topic)

The one in that topic is a little out of date but PPM has the current version. Makes an sfs as root or spot, your choice. :)

Hello.

I have noticed the following things:

1. It seems that a touchpad setting utility (e.g. flsynclient) is missing.
2. It looks as if gtk-3 was not included when I look in the PPM.
Chrome starts fine, so in reality gtk-3 should be included.
3. It looks as if qt5 was not included when I look in the PPM.
QtNote starts fine. so in reality qt5 should be included.

2 and 3 are a little nuisance, because gtk-3 and qt5 also get installed when some applications are installed.

When X starts, a Japanese sentence is displayed for a moment to the effect that "All the meanings are lost through translation." This surprises me a little, because I want to localize Puppy. :)

new iso uploaded.

new kernel 5.6.7
ydrv binned, just sticking to a minimal v normal pup configuration
cups should be fixed
PPM should now reflect changes to installed packages when removing/adding adrv.sfs
A new numix & jwm theme
Text editor back to geany
gsettings problem fixed
jwm config fixed hopefully
psynclient added

issues: .......

abiword defaults to a font that isn't installed (will maybe go back to the gtk2 version)
gftp isn't working properly
qemu from the ppm isn't working properly (this and the gftp bug may be related)

@666philb am downloading now, :)

I compiled the latest dunst in slacko and libxdgbasedir is dropped as a dependency so that may be worth looking into for the next.

Cheers

============================

Later...

New kernel seem ok :). Vivaldi is running niceley as spot.

GFTP seems working here. Just uploaded an image to my server.. see below

Image

Will try ibiblio, which uses more secure proto soon

..even later

Ibiblio works with the following caveat

It didn't work at first. It wouldn't authenticate. I logged in on the CLI with ssh

WARNING: anyone with an ibiblio password should be EXTREMELY careful when logged in over ssh on cli. Several years ago the entire Lucid pup repo got wiped and I can only deduce that it was someone with an ibiblio password. Fortunately ally had a backup at the internet archive so I could pull the entire lucid repo back over to ibiblio.

Once logged in over ssh I logout (simply type logout) and I was able to log in with gftp and upload a screenshot.

Image

Which brings me to a minor bug... pressing prt sc (print screen - maybe slightly different on some keyboards) runs mtpaint -s.. maybe this is on purpose but I find TAS more useful :)

hi 01micko,

thanks for testing!

i have a suspicion that the gftp bug may actually be a bigger issue. for some reason the acceptance window doesn't pop up even using bionics gftp (which works in bionic). what particular things might affect that? (note that a similar issue may be affecting qemu)

could it be a xorg issue or gtk or something else? what could it be?

Here's a clue

Code: Select all

root# gftp
gFTP Warning: Skipping line 248 in config file: entropy_source
gFTP Warning: Skipping line 251 in config file: entropy_len
gFTP Warning: Skipping line 254 in config file: verify_ssl_peer

An ssl problem? A config problem?

Out of time right now, off to work

9.0.1

#40 Post by artsown »

9.0.1 is very nice!

1. CUPS and my printer/scanner work fine.
2. PupClockset now can set time format, etc.
3. Not experiencing any problem with gftp. Set it up and transferred a file ok.
4. gatotray still shows 18 degrees all the time.

Nice to have geany back :)

So far everything "feels solid and quick".
