How to type Japanese in Puppy Linux?

#1 Post by Valerio »

Hi there! Sorry in advance for my English. I'm new to Puppy Linux. I did as shown in this post http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78917
I installed lang_pack_ja-lupq-0.5.pet and managed to correctly view Japanese characters with Puppy Linux. Then I downloaded
scim-1.4.9.pup4.4.2.2.1.pet
scim-anthy-1.2.7.pup4.4.2.2.1.pet
anthy-9100h.patch13Bptn23.2009527.1.pet
As the guide says SCIM Input Method Setup shows up in the Desktop Settings menu but when clicked nothing happens so I'm stuck at this point. The same goes for Anthy Dictionary Editor.

Does anybody know what to do? I can't find anything on YouTube. Is it possible that nobody did a guide about this? :(
Thanks in advance for any reply :)

try pls http://inputking.com  you will wonder

(but you will probably have to install some Japanese font before you do that! You can test it at https://www.goethe-verlag.com/book2/EN/ENJA/ENJA003.HTM !)

wow, very impressive! The Japanese input method works great :)
That will come in handy!
Anyway, do I have to assume from your answer that it is not possible to install the Japanese language on Puppy Linux?

There used to be Japanese Puppies.

I even used one in Tokyo years ago.

Was it Nori or Makoto running them?

I used to use Japanese versions of Puppy 4.3.1 and Precise, yes. But those had all of the necessary Japanese support already installed; I've never tried installing the IME and other support for a Puppy myself, beyond adding CJK/Unicode fonts.

I'd wonder if shinobar might have more information about setting everything you'd need up (if you still want to try it yourself and not grab one of the Japanese versions of Puppy (I don't think anyone's mastered a Japanese version of the more recent Puppies, but I may be wrong)). You might try sending him a PM and asking about it.

I know there also used to be a Japanese IME you could install in Firefox as an extension... not perfect, and it was also well before Mozilla switched to 'web extensions.' I don't know if it would work in, say, Pale Moon.

Thanks for the answers guys! In other words, you're suggesting to install puppy Linux directly in Japanese, right? If not, I may ask shinobar about installing the Japanese language in an English version of puppy Linux.

Sorry guys, I'm not familiar with the OS and am not a native speaker of English :)

If you don't mind using a possibly older version of Puppy, you can. I don't know if anyone's released a Japanese version of any of the recent Puppies.

That's perfectly fine. We have people lurking here from all around the world, and dedicated subforums for Spanish, French and German speakers. :)

Makoto, are you sure that they included a functional Japanese IME? All I can remember is that I gave up on them because they didn't, or at least I couldn't make them work. Long time ago

I never had any problems with entering Japanese under the Japanese versions of 4.3.1 and Precise I was using. Then again, I'll admit it wasn't the easiest IME I've used, and I also kept alternate methods of entering Japanese around that I could copy from.
