Installed Puppy on IBM laptop, can't see my CD drive

#1 Post by thehousedad »

I made and installation of Puppy into an old IBM laptop. The specs are 4GB HDD 192mb of ram, and a 266 ghz pentium processor. It is running nice, however since I installed it to the HDD my CD drive from which it was installed is missing. Please also advice the best way to install a Belkin WIFI card. Thanks.

I found the following article on the subject:

http://www.linux-magazine.com/issue/62/ ... ration.pdf

They might as well be speaking German. Can some one explain it to me. Any suggestions on sites where to learn the Linux file system?

Hi thehousedad

Since you don't say I'm assuming you're using puppy 2.14
CD Drive
when you say its missing perhaps you could tell us what it is you have done to find it, where have you looked?
have you tried MUT and PMount
try menu - setup - CD/DVD drive Wizard

Wireless
try running
menu - setup - Network Wizard

Thank you so much for pointing the obvious. I was able to use PMount to find my cd. I was also able to use the wizard to install the card.
I am very impressed with puppy. It is stiill a little more complicated than what I am used to, or maybe that is just it I am not used to it. Well it took me a while to get used to using DOS, Windows, and as of lately OS X.
In the meantime does anyone know how to place an item on the menu. I installed several programs, including firefox, using pupget. I am sure it will be obvious, but I'd appreciate the help nontheless.

Have you rebooted ? I fell into the trap looking for an item and was advised to reboot. Found it in the internet section on reboot.

Trust this assists

If the new programs conform to the new XDG menu system?
open a console window
enter the command
fixmenus
now do
menu - shutdown - restart JWM

This should create the menu entries, if there are any that this doesn't work for, let us know what they are.
In the shortterm many programs can be started by typing their name in a console window.

welcome to the kennels

thehousedad,

The forum works better if each thread is about just one subject. It's ok to start a new thread asking about your wireless card. (You might get better service if you do it in the Hardware -> Networking -> Wireless section of the forum. :) )
