2.11 SeaMonkey: console won't do anything

#1 Post by niel6 »

Very nice distribution, and fast. *smile*

I have v 2.11 seamonkey.

When I open console, I get the "#" prompt, but when I try to run e.g.

ls
or
/bin/busybox ls

everything is completely stuck, and nothing happens at all?

no idea :(

But you might try another console:
xterm:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/xterm.pup

aterm:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/download.php?id=39

Do those work?

***
I downloaded another iso, same problem.
aterm does still not work, but xterm does work.
***
Then I tried to boot on my other pc, on which windows xp, ubuntu and knoppix works well.
I do not know whether console works on this pc, as the the mouse does not move.
It is a usb mouse.
I get into the desktop okay, but without a moving mouse.
I have tried both ps/2 and usb mouse, but without succes.
I tried to edit xorg.config and did set the mouse up, the same way as ubuntu, but the mouse still does not move?
*smile a little*

Do Menu>Setup>Mouse/keyboard Wizard. Or easier, just get one of those USB/PS2 converters and plug it into your PS2 port. I finally did that because it's easier than all the time telling it there is a USB mouse (the setting doesn't seem to stick well).

Oops, you said you tried PS2 mouse...

:)
My pc with the mouse problem is a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo 600.
The mouse is plugged into an ordinary square usb plug, mouse not work.
Then I tried an intermediate middle piece (interface) of aprox 2 inches (round in one end and flat square in the other), and plugged the mouse into the PS2 (round Plug) plug, mouse not work.
This mouse an original Fujitsu Siemens optical mouse (red light bottom).
Now I tried an older PS2 mouse plugged direct into the PS2 plug, and now it works.
***
Then I tried the console on this pc, and when I press "shift enter" it works, except the "pwd" command, which do not work on this pc.
So far I am now happy, and thanks to your positive suggestions. *smile*

niel6, what do you get if you type this?

xmodmap -pke | grep -i return

for a US keyboard, it is probably this:

keycode 36 = Return

you can set the Return key to the same as a US keyboard by typing:

xmodmap -e 'keycode 36 = Return'

you can put that command in /root/.xinitrc if you want it to execute every time Puppy boots

@niel6, sorry to intervene in your post (btw my Belgian keyboard returns keycode 36 = Return)

@GuestToo,
Is there a 'capture' program that gives the keycode when a key is pressed. Note that I am thinking specially at those extra keys on my keyboard like volume+, volume-, mute, Internet, Email, Search, key with windows on it, key with change directory on it.
Puppy Linux 2.02 SMkey, KDE354mini, wine0.9.20, devx-qt-renamed.
Puppy Linux 2.10r1 SMkey, JWM, devx_qt_renamed_210, KDE355mini

beem, yes, it is called
xev
It opens a window.
Click on its title, to focus it.
Then don't move the mouse, hit only the keys you need.

It should be in most Puppys, if not, I can search where I uploaded it once for older versions.

I have two enter buttons on my keyboard.

When I use the enter button on the number keyboard, console does nothing.

When I use the enter button on the textual keyboard, console works.

Shift+enter also works.
