I get the same error message when trying to connect via Roaring Penguin over WLAN (working) to my PPPoE connection with puppy 2.15 CE. What could be the reason of this?

This is caused by a limitation in the busybox implementation of the ip command.
It is mentioned in the documentation with the pptpconfig dotpup.
There is a dotpup with a debian version of ip that has always worked fine for me it should be available from the same place you got the pptpconfig dotpup. Try here.
