Puppy 1.0.5 Alpha2 - Developers and Enthusiasts

#1 Post by Lobster »

:)

I am kinda hiding in the Bugs section (Lobsters are related to locusts - being exoskeletal)

psst . . . did not want anyone to get too excited about the new ALPHA release of the compiler Pup - which gives us insight into 1.0.5 . . .

KDE (Krazy Puppy) and fvwm95 are released as pupgets
- very good idea (the KDE pupget did not work and the fvwm95 is not fully formed - many items missing)
So JWM is the default - works nicely
New colour, background icons - luvely (would suggest a light tan for menus - some colour blind people see orange tints as black - they may not be able to see the menus)

The dustbin/trash icon (hooray) - needs to delete icons from the desktop in the future - but great to see it there

Chat needs to be set up with Puppy IRC settings

Good to see Mozilla leave the Bugs and testing menus in Barrys version

I find the littlemozilla theme had to be changed to pinball - but that is a personal preference (the pinball theme is much bigger) so using this theme is a good idea

Rox is now Home - which makes more sense but is the name "Home" quite right?

The message when you click mail is weird (tells you to open from Mozilla) but it is what you need to do - ie it is pragmatic - not ideal

Xine has a library missing which I have mentioned in the Radio section of new dotpups already

Putting help on the desktop is a GOOD plan - took me a month to discover Puppys help originally and it is VERY comprehensive - we are a well documented distro thanks to Barry

Console is now Bash - Hooray this I feel is important as it is almost a standard - I may be mistaken and ASH may be sufficient but I feel more comfortable that we are using BASH

Good to see Mut activated by the "drives" . . .

Packages should (perhaps?) be renamed software

Good to see the 100% (so far for me) "leafpad" as the default editor

All I can say is this Alpha release shows and proves that Puppy 1.0.5 is gonna be very much simpler and more pleasing to use

Dogee champagne and biscuits all 'round . . .
(and a beer for Barry)

I am gonna tip toe off quietly . . .
What fun! (no yelping at the back there . . )

Psst ... PS see a pic of the alpha here

Lobster,
the title of this thread "1.0.5 rc2 alpha" is not right... it's "alpha2"
"rc" means release candidate, which it is far from.

I just looked at your pic.
There is a fix for that white band at the bottom, and presume there's one at the top.
If you go into /root/.xinitrc, ...ummm, just looking at the code:

Code: Select all

fullscreen) #try fill screen but keep proportions.
  #xsetroot -solid "white"
xsetroot -solid "#ffe6cd" #very pale peach, for around puppydog edges.
  xli -onroot -quiet -$CURRENTREPMODE $CURRENTBKGRND &
  ;;
fillscreen) #totally fill screen, may not work high resolutions.
  xli -onroot -quiet -$CURRENTREPMODE $CURRENTBKGRND &
  ;;
The xsetroot will fill the bands with the chosen colour.
Which it should be doing in your case, as /etc/background is set to
"fullscreen". ...so, you must have changed something?

Note also, the Internet dialup icon gets drawn bottom-left corner if you run the
Modem Wizard, where you seem to have moved the icons -- not a problem if not using dialup.

icewm and rox 2.2.0 can set their own wallpaper, which might cause problems too (for people who install them)

Well, we might have to put some extra tests into .xinitrc.

Lobster, it's fine changing the Moz theme, very easy to do.

Regarding why I chose Littlemozilla:
It's only a 210K jar file. Jar files are compressed with zip, so already as small as they can be. Classic theme jar file is 600K, Modern theme is 855K.
Taking them out and only having Little mozilla reduces the live-cd iso file by 600 + 855 - 210 = 1245K !!!!
That's a massive saving, too good to pass up.

Here are some other small themes on the mozdev site:
lopburiflat 288K
micromozilla 171K
nautipolis 373K

Most of the others are huge, like over 1M.

I confirmed that TestGtkEmbed, renamed as "gtkmoz" in Puppy, the internal HTML file viewer, does work properly if Classic theme is restored.

I dunno, may have to look into the source code for TestGtkEmbed.

Changed the screen resolution - this banding always appears
when using 1024x1280 but is OK at lower res
Incidentally if you turn up the brightness and contrast there are extended whiskers on the Puppy . . . in the background (wass 'e sad about den . . .)
Note also, the Internet dialup icon gets drawn bottom-left corner if you run the
Modem Wizard, where you seem to have moved the icons -- not a problem if not using dialup.
good tip - may use the modem option later
- one weird one - tried running a DVD and it crashes in full screen (and there is a slight jump/pause every 5 seconds or so (even in smaller mode) - I am using a Duron 1200mz with shared graphic
- but the weird thing is G2's and the radio stations in Xine are now working - Mellow! (earlier I reported a sort of dual signal . . .)

Firewall wizard just jumping out (no script running with messages as usual in 1.0.4)

Will try changing the name of the thread - if I can not may require a Flash moderator . . .

Gxine fullscreen:
That's interesting (annoying) that it crashes for you Lobster.
Anyone else got fullscreen either working or not?

Lobster, did you try doing full-screen a second time?

Re the banding:
no it should not be happening now, whatever resolution.
Or rather, it is hidden by the background colour specified by setroot.
Lobster, did you change the deskrop image settings?

I tried it a third time and it worked . . . full screen - so that is good news
It also seemed smoother (I turned off the visualisation which might be still taking up clock cycles) Not sure why this should be . . .
- actually I have a good idea why - I downloaded the extra codecs (to play the radio) and this seemed to fix something for the DVD play . . .
Is ALSA being used in this release?

I did not change the image setting - though I did change the GTK theme to "Green Forest" - just changed back to peach but will have to send this and reset.

PS.
Good news about the new Mozilla with image blocking and composer spell check . . .

Any aprox ideas on when 1.0.5 will be ready? I have to say that the new icons and layout make a great deal of difference to the feel. JWM has been behaving - so far. Gonna stay in the alpha as long as possible - the browser screen fonts are the most difficult to contend with - the rest is both familiar and improved and quite workable

- have not downloaded the compiler component - just reporting on the new environment - which is great. Roll on 1.0.5

:)

I have this white band on the bottom and top of the screen in 1280x1024. If I turn the res down to 1024x768 it goes away. I run chubby puppy 105 and haven't fidled with anything else. Any input on this? Is there a fix or something?
fake it until you make it
