The easiest way from my experience when I was trying to write with Leafpad or OOo Writer in Slovenian language is just installing and using ISO 8859-2 fonts.
1. Download ISO 8859-2 True Type fonts from: ftp://ftp.lugos.si/pub/lugos/arhiv/Type1-Latin2-Fonts/l2ttf004.zip
2. Unzip fonts to /root/.fonts/ .
3. Set one of these fonts: Arial L2, Courier New L2 or Times New Roman L2 as default. For example, in Leafpad you can choose: Options / Font / Arial L2.
ISO 8859-2 (Latin 2) fonts are providing all the neccessary glyphs for writing in Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian (in Latin transcription), Serbocroatian, Slovak, Slovenian, Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian.
Here is the link to verry useful site about ISO 8859-2 fonts: http://nl.ijs.si/gnusl/cee/iso8859-2.html
