2.14: 3C589D PCMCIA ethernet adapter won't connect to router
I've installed 2.14 on a Dell Inspiron 7000, and it seems to work well, except for the network connection. This is via a 3C589D PCMCIA ethernet adapter. I have installed the 3c589_cs driver, and set up a static IP address. Puppy says the connection is active, the indicator LED is lit normally, and it flashes when the router connection is unplugged. The router port LED is not lit, though, and there is no communication taking place.
I previously managed to load Ubuntu, and it all worked OK with this.
I have an answer to this, but don't understand it. The router is a Voyager 205, and the supplied ethernet cable doesn't work with Puppy installed. It works OK with Windows and Ubuntu, but not with Puppy. Swap the cable and puppy talks to the router, put the original back and the port light stays out.
So what is different in Ubuntu that causes it to work. Is Ubuntu more tolerant of noise and errors than Puppy???
