How to use software from another linux installation?

#1 Post by lvds »

Hi,

On a hard drive i have another partition with Xubuntu because i need a few software for my work, like EtherApe, or when i have finish to work, like DemocracyTV... As i have not been able to have them running in Puppy, i wonder if it would not be possible after having loaded Puppy to run these programs directly from my xubuntu ... ?!

From all what i have read here, it seems some of us have done it yet, may someone explain how to do that ? until we get the PET packages to have the programs right in Puppy

Many thanks to you all !
Laurent.

Hi lvds; Ubuntu is based on Debian which has some dir. structure differences.
All I can suggest is that you find the apps. executable file in the Ubuntu
partitions /usr/bin ( or maybe other dir.) & run it to se if it works.
If it won't work, that's pretty much that, but you could try reworking any of the
Ubuntu apps. that're really important to you.

I've used Debian apps. in Puppy, the different dirs. have to be changed to the
dir. structure that Puppy uses, it's not hard to do, you just have to know which
ones to change to what, some apps. don't have files in the different dirs. & so no changes are needed.
The other item is the libraries that the apps. need, Puppy may not be running
them, & they'd have to be added, & it's always possable they're incompatable.
