How to load an SFS file from live CD ?

#1 Post by Alienx »

please, how can I load an SFS file from live CD ?

It´s very important to me because I don´t have free space on HD to install Puppy.

I'm using Puppy v2.16experimental2 and want to run openoffice-2.2.0.sfs.

I tryed to add it to Puppy iso image (as with Slax modules) but don´t worked .

In and old version I did it with devx module as follows:

1-first boot: it was not there

2-I reboot and save modifications to CD

3-second boot: devx works
Sorry, broken english above :-)

Your English is fine. I'm not sure I can help you, but I have some questions.

You've made clear that you don't have disk space.

Q: Do you want to run the .sfs file from the cd disc?

or

Q: Do you want to copy it from cd disc to ram and run it there?

I would like to edit the iso and burn the SFS files beside pup_2.15.sfs and run all as a normal Live CD, copyng the files (devx module and Openoffice) to ram

I have few space on HD but lots of memory

I suppose you'd like all this to happen seamlessly also?

The first thing I'd do is look inside initrd and see if it exposes the the magic for incorporating .sfs files into the filesystem.

But not having enough disk space is like tying your hands behind your back.

That area is a work-in-progress for 2.16exp2.
I presume you were able to add the SFS file to the CD(?)
Getting it recognised at bootup is another matter, and I hope to check this out this weekend, aiming for a 2.16exp3 next week.

multisession CD

#6 Post by raffy »

Hi AlienX, welcome back. :) Here are some old tricks, but not guaranteed to work in that new release by Barry.

A multisession CD loads sfs files automatically, so just make your CD multisession, save to it/reboot. I assume the sfs files are already on the CD.

Or you can trick Puppy by placing a folder or file on the CD with a date format as name, like 2007-04-01. See here.

New experiments about sfs loading are in Barry's news pages, like this one. Sunburnt has also posted a number of ways to do it here in the forum.

EDIT: Barry and I posted almost simultaneously - his is the best advice you can get, of course. :)

thanks raffy, Barry and all !

I think this useful feature is not working at momment but Barry said he´s working on it for exp3 !!! :D

one idea I thing is very useful, cool and interesting is to create 2 new boot parameters:

load and noload (as in Slax)

so I can put all my SFS files on the iso and choose what I want to run on Live CD

example: I have devx , openofice and KDE modules on the CD

default is load all but I can do at boot

puppy noload=kde.sfs and load only devx and OpenOffice

other feature:

load an SFS file from HD

example: puppy load=/dev/hda5/myfolder/openoffice-2.2.0.sfs

that would be perfect !!!!!!! :D
