Reinstalled Puppy, get Grub error 15: File Not Found

#1 Post by gacl »

Hello,

I just reinstalled Puppy but now GrUB gives me this error:

Code: Select all

Error 15: File not found

Press any key to continue. . .
It was working fine before but i have completely forgotten how to make this work. Thanks.

Welcome Gus,

I have some questions about this:

Q: did you reinstall Puppy in the same location?

Q: did you reinstall GRUB?

Q: does /boot/vmlinuz exist?

Q: does /vmlinuz exist?

Q: is it a 'nomal' or co-exist install?

Q: is GRUB installed on the MBR?

Well, i had two partitions before, but hda1 was tiny - about 10 MB - and i can't remember why. I'm sure it had something to do with GrUB. Now i just have a 1 GB hda1 and free space.

Yes, i reinstalled GrUB.

Normal install.

GrUB is in the MBR.

Neither of those files exist. I'm on a USB drive, so i assume:

Code: Select all

mkdir /mnt/hda1
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
ls /mnt/hda1
ls /mnt/hda1/boot
I'm using 2.14.

Thanks.

How about booting Puppy from disc and do a fresh install?

hda? is the intended destination??

Use the 'puppy pfix=ram' to prevent anything from being mounted.

Then reinstall, presuming you already have your ext2 partition.

Sometimes the grub portion of the install program takes a while to show itself. Just wait if it does, because it will.

Additional thought: I wonder if you hard drive is properly prepared. How about running Gparted and have a visual on it, before trying the install?

Heh! I wiped the HD and reinstalled and now it works. The only thing i remember doing differently this time is that i mounted the flash drive so the installer could find vmlinuz. Without mounting the flash drive a simple find / -name vmlinuz would find nothing. So GrUB would install without finding vmlinuz. At least that's what i think.

Thanks Bruce.
