Compiling GNOME Desktop (need help)

#1 Post by John Doe »

I'm trying to compile gnome up from scratch so I can build a squash and have the knowledge to do so.

Right now I'm working on just a "base system" no vector graphics or anything and I've made it this far (in order):

glib
glibc
gconf
libbonobo
gnome-mime-data
gnome-vfs
esound
libgnome
libbonoboui
gnome-keyring
libgnomeui

anyone know what's next?

just a suggestion (or did you already compile?)

Freerock GNOME is a complete GNOME Desktop distribution designed and packaged specifically for Slackware Linux. Freerock GNOME installs cleanly and non-intrusively by utilizing the standard Slackware software package format (".tgz"). Freerock GNOME integrates seamlessly and easily into Slackware Linux version 10.2.
As I said in another thread: MU's KDE355 "self-made" contains a script
which produces an outputfolder from the tgz-files:

mksquashfs Folder File.sfs

Just a suggestion

Have you tried Garnome or JHBuild?

JHBuild  http://www.jamesh.id.au/software/jhbuild/
JHBuild is a build script for building Gnome from CVS. Unlike some build scripts, jhbuild makes use of dependency information, so it will only build what is needed to build the packages you want.
GARNOME  http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/
A build utility for the GNOME Desktop
GARNOME is a build utility that allows users to build the GNOME Desktop.

Based on the GAR ports system developed by Nick Moffitt. It downloads, builds and installs the GNOME Desktop from the latest tarball releases. It also includes extra GNOME software to provide users with a comfortable and complete desktop environment
Also, I think that you'll be able to compile Gnome only up to 2.15.x without update gtk, atk, glib, etc. But some nice apps requires that updates e.g. Kiba Dock(I've compiled it but needs a newer api :( ), gnome dock, etc.

Good luck.
