2.16.1 NvidiaMX440 SVIDEO TVout not working-Xorg(WORKAROUND)

#1 Post by ohyes »

Ive had a go at getting Xorg working with S-Video.

The only monitor is the TV at the moment.

TV-out works at the moment with Composite and Xvesa..

but as everyone knows S-video is better.

I get the blank screen if I try Xorg with a low res say 640x480.

Anyone got this to work.

I tried installing the nvidia pet/pup, and it recognises my MX440 card but fails to see that it has TV Out options.

I also tried putting Tvout options into Xorg.conf but all failed.

Every attempt/failure at using xorg ends in me losing all my set Icons when I reboot ?!$

So everytime so far I have to reinstall to have the set Icons.

Any help most appreciated

Hi gdemonta

Thx for the post pointer, I had found that one and had used it for the basis of my testing, however still no go.. :( I got cranky LOL kept losing my Icons having to reinstall.

I notice however that you also have an MX440, do you use it for S-Video on a CRT TV solely ? Could you post your Xorg.conf ..pleaseee.

Did you install the Nvidia drivers pup/pet ? if so which one. ?

Im probably playing the right notes but perhaps in the wrong order :)

Thanks

sorry didn't see your post yesterday. Weel in 2.14 I always used the nvidia drivers because I couldn't watch movies in fullscreen with mplayer. And yes tv out worked.
The thing is, with 2.16 when I tried to install the nvidia drivers, puppy didn't liked it at all!!
I have to try with the 3DContol center, did you try?

So for both of us the Nvidia drivers appear not to work with 2.16

Im not sure but I might go back to 2.14 as it works for you

I havnt tried 3DCC do you mean the pup version...?

anyone else got Svideo tvout nvidia cards working with 2.16 ?

what I would try would be converting the pup from dotpup.de
into a pet package using this HOW-TO.
But unfortunately I don't have much time!
Regarding my xorg.conf I don't have my tweaked one since I installed 2.16 and erased everything (as an ex-windows user, I don't rely on updating my OS). But the part about the monitor is exactly the same as the one I gave you the ling in this thread.
good luck. If it really doesn't work for you, I can tell you everything worked fine for me with 2.14.

Hi Lobster

thx for that ..looking good.

Just to clarify ..you are using Xvesa with S-video tvout on 2.16 ?

if so please can you post your xvesa config
I wasnt aware you could run S-video with Xvesa,

At the moment I have tvout running with composite/Xvesa

Running with Xorg with Nvidia drivers should be the best option..especially for DVD playback or even games but S-video/Xvesa is still better than composite/Xvesa

Cheers

My MX4000 64mb pci works with s-video/Xvesa and composite/Xvesa but it cannot quite fill the entire screen in any of the modes. The text reads much better with s-video then it does with composite . Never was able to get s-video/xorg to work with any of the puppies.
I didn't alter puppy(dont know how to)I just pluged the computer into the tv and booted pfix=ram I dont even know how to find and post the xvesa /conf that you want.('')

Pence or Lobster please could one of you's post your Xvesa config

Xvesa for me only works with composite if I plug S-Video in with Xvesa I get the picture in Black/White so Im assuming that a config change is needed to get colour.

TIA

Hi Pence

Didnt know you responded as you edited instead of replied..be nice to have an option with the forum whereby you can view edited posts as well new posts.

Thx for your reply...Im gonna try again see if S-video works just plugging in with Xvesa..I thought Id tried it..but I tried alot of things so you never know.

Though Im gonna go back to 2.14 so I can get Xorg and the Nvidia drivers working with my card..then I can get smooth DVD playback and even games to work better..

Until the nvidia pet/pup is created that works with 2.16+ I think going back to 2.14 is the only option

Cheers

ok the TV out saga

tried S-Video cable with Xvesa ...it sorta works..but
the colour is out rather like the gamma/chroma is wrong if you know what I mean ..also has a mesh look to the screen..hard to describe..

Anyway Ive just tried going back to 2.14 installing nvidia pup and giving it a go...well it didnt work for me.

I installed nvidia ran xorgwizard from the install menu
and then ran xwin..I got a display..woohoo but it looked the same as with Xvesa gamma or chroma wrong..

So Im thinking all I need to do is enable svideo in xorg.conf and we should b right..so

I added the xtra options for svideo in xorg.conf and reran
xwindows...xwindows failed to start exiting to the prompt
ok I thought no problem I will just rerun xorgwizard and get me display back...

But no everytime after it would exit to the prompt,

EDIT: Um sorry not quite true  ..I actually get a screen that goes black/blank..it did exit once but I found a typo..

This is exactly what happened with 2.16.1 so it seems if things arent right the first time the nvidiadrivers or xorg getscrewed and wont work..

Any perts on xorg/xwindows have any ideas ?

TIA

info for reference

in the xorg log it says that it is ignoring these options I tell it to use..!?

Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"

The web is littered with people having problems with people ending up with blank - black screens using Nvidia drivers...most appear to be driver related..

OK

Its working with S-Video

Ive hunted and tried a few solutions found on the net.

The one that seemed to do it was

changed driver from "nv" to "nvidia" under device.
What is the driver "nv" and whats it doing in my config if it dosent work ??

Now --> Driver "nvidia"

I also have disabled Load glx ..because it cant load anyway because something is missing so said xorg log...are we supposed to install something extra to get glx to work ??

# This loads the GLX module
#Load "glx"

I have absolutely no idea why it all worked or what all this means..

Perhaps someone can explain..
Picture is much sharper now, fonts are crisp, DVD playback has improved.

One thing for sure Im getting faster at editing Xorg.conf

:) My most humble apologies for not responding sooner.

Basically I found 800 x 600 was the max I could get. Xorg did not work at all. A great deal of difference and clarity came from adjusting the TV settings.

It may be different using PAL and NTSC

I think experimenting is the way forward and you seem to be doing well.

I will do more experiments in the future and report back. Sorry can not be of more help :)

Lobster

No need to apologise..np at all thx for your reply :)

Good news ...I Got it working with xorg and svideo see previous post.

Just a recap tvout now working with Svideo with
2.16.1 with nvidia pup installed, works on pal,or ntsc ( multisytem TV.)

It really is a lot better picture with Xorg in combo with svideo.

ohyes,
the diference between nv and nvidia is that nv are open source drivers for nvidia cards, nvidia are the proprietary drivers from Nvidia, so that would axplain why it works better.

Ahh OK Thx gdemonta

What is not known ...yet. is how do we end up using one and not the other, we didnt get a choice to say which one to use, Im assuming we installed both.

BTW I installed the newer driver 9xxx from the pup.

Before I forget, it was really helpful to use the 'installnvidia' script at the prompt when either editing xorg.conf and or trying the edited config by starting xorg & xwindows.
