2.16 can't find aspect ratio, but Gxine gets it right

I run Puppy version 2.16 on a VIA EN-15000 Mini-ITX motherboard.

It runs great except that I can't find a way to get the correct aspect ratio on my Asus 24" wide screen monitor (Model AL2416W). The native resolution of the monitor is 1920x1200. When using 1600x1200 resolution it stretches to fill the screen and distorts the aspect ratio.

Now for the wierd part. When watching a Divx video in Gzine the aspect ratio always comes out correct.

I have tried many different videos with different aspect ratios and they all come out correct, even when I change from viewing in a window to full screen.

How can Gzine possibly know that the aspect ratio is wrong and make the correction?

I don't know how Gxine does what it does... but could you please run this dotpup (just download it and then click on it) and post here the results, so I can try and find out why you can't get your resolution?

Does it run at 1920x1200 in other distros (i.e. is the screen card up to it)?

I know that the maximum resolution of the onboard video is 1600x1200.

I've had a quick look and it seems ok... I'll look at it more closely and see if I can find the reason it doesn't work.

Your screen supports 1920x1200, but your card goes up to 1920x1080, so the highest resolution that's compatible with both is 1600x1200.

However, I looked through your data and the xorgwizard should give you the option of 1920x1200, with a "OK for screen, maybe NOT OK for card" comment next to it.

Didn't you have that option?

Thanks for the HW-test.pup, Dougal. Maybe it will shine some light on why Puppy has not been able to use the 32" Viewsonic 1360 x 768 LCD I bought to use as a monitor. It works fine in Windows, so I know it isn't a hardware problem. When I boot into Puppy, Xorg gives me the choice of 1360 x 768 with "OK for screen, maybe not ok for card," but when I choose 1360 x 768 I get a blue screen and the words "out of range" show up after a few seconds. It works fine in Puppy at lesser resolution settings.

Sorry to hijack this thread. We will now return to our regular program. :)

Yes, I already tried that. When I select 1920x1200 it defaults to 1600x1200 and streches the aspect ratio to fill the screen. I would much rather get the correct aspect ratio and black bars on the edges of the screen.

I think it might be a driver problem.
Some people with nVidia cards can get high resolutions after installing the proprietary driver, resolutions that had given them "out of range" without it....

That's interesting... maybe there's some bug in the wizard that makes the dialog wrong?
Have you tried replacing 1600x1200 with 1920x1200 in /etx/X11/xorg.conf, then restarting X? that would give us an idea if the problem is with the wizard or the HW.

I have the same problem with Puppy 2.17.1 and an ATI Radeon X1950PRO. The card can do much more than what the moniter can handle, which is 1680x1250, so this shouldn't happen, right?

I also am using an Acer, but mine is an AL2216W, the 22" inch version of what he has. Exactly the same thing happens, it gives me the option to choose the right res, but then defaults to a much lower one.

And just like JRV, movies look fine.

Hi JRV

The AL2416W supports the following frequencies:

Horizontal frequency 24 to 80 KHz
Vertical frequency 49 to 75 Hz

First thing to try is to edit your xorg.conf to reflect these values under the Section "Monitor".

secondly edit your xorg.conf to your desired resolution and color depth under the Section "Screen"

Then restart the xserver (ctl+alt+del then "xwin")

If this fails you will have to make a custom Modeline entry for your xorg.conf, get back to me and I will let you know how to do it.

An interesting little tidbit.

I was using a DVI cable before and getting up to 1400x1050, which not only is the wrong aspect ratio but much lower than what my LCD can support.

I used a DVI to VGA adapter and now it'll hit 1600x1200. Still not what I need but mighty close. I hope that will help.

Here's something that might help.

I had been using xorg to run my ATI and now my NVIDIA cards. When I checked the input from the OSD on the LCD, I saw with VGA (1600x1200), with DVI (1600x1050). That was with ATI. Now, with NVIDIA, I see with DVI (1680x1250), yay native res!

That's from the OSD on the monitor not actual desktop size. I was still only getting to small resolutions. So, I switched to xvesa, and bingo. I click the more button, and I have the choice of my native res. And it works.
