Looking for file manager like Midnight Commander but as GUI
Looking for file manager like Midnight Commander but as GUI
looking for a 2 pane file manager with the posibility to have a file list in each of the panes (not like uXplor a foldertree and an file list). like a mc but with gui.
Re: looking for app like mc but as gui
The program you seek is Xfe (Xfile explorer) which is available in the PSI repositories. It requires Fox shutterbug be installed, too, as that contains the library dependencies.oliver69 wrote:looking for a 2 pane file manager with the posibility to have a file list in each of the panes (not like uXplor a foldertree and an file list). like a mc but with gui.
Hope that helps.

Or you looked for this:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/File_Managers ... 0.5.91.pup
also like the old Norton Commander (with gui).

Oh, now that's great! I've just ditched my Xfe and Fox-shutterbug in favor of Tux Commander. Great stuff! Thanks, weredog!weredog wrote:Or you looked for this:

If you're a refugee from the Land of Redmond, you might like ytree. Check your dotpup/pupget/petget package manager for it.

a little problem with tuxcommander
These dependencies required by TuxCommander package are missing:
File /usr/lib/tuxcmd/libgnome_vfs.so has these missing library files:
libgnomevfs-2.so.0 libbonobo-2.so.0 libgconf-2.so.4 libbonobo-activation.so.4
The PETget package manager does not know what package/s has/have these libraries.
is this only for a virtual filesystem????

i don't know about the .pet package for tuxcommander, but i just dloaded binary from here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tuxc ... 2?download
and it works straight away. ( it also has aplugins folder containing libgnome_vfs.so & libnull_plugin.so)

Ytree is a fine app but the official one doesn't work right with consistency. One should make their own compile and note the difference in file size also.alienjeff wrote:If you're a refugee from the Land of Redmond, you might like ytree. Check your dotpup/pupget/petget package manager for it.

The compile is very easy.

Excellent - just decompress and run tuxcommander!
Thanks for the URL, muggins.

IIRC the last 'real' Norton Commander sold in the US was version 4. I've attached a picture of it. For me our Linux Midnight Commander looks designed after it.
I noted there was a similar Norton Commander version 5 in German
The UK apparently sold a Windows Version, but sales had stopped before I could buy.
Windows 3.x had a Norton Commander but it wasn't' anything like the one pictured. And I didn't like it either.
---------------
The best one I've seen for Windows is Total Commander. I tried it in wine, but with less than satisfactory results.
Tux Commander interface is much like Total Commander, but at a lower stage of development. Sadly, I haven't seen a lot of developers working on it, otherwise it could be a real winner.
In any event I really prefer dual pane file managers.

WISH File Rusher, inspired by FileRunner, is one of my Tcl/Tk apps I haven't yet rewritten with Gnocl to take on the selected GTK+ theme, but it comes with several color schemes that look almost like those in the clearlooks-colorschemes .PET built into Puppy 4.2. (If you don't like any of them, you can fairly easily create one or more you do like.) Requires only Tcl and Tk 8.5 (or greater), also built into Puppy 4.2. Here it is with the "Autumnalia" color scheme (since this screenshot was taken, I've added a "Petget" button in the middle column for installing Puppy packages):
It's stupid to use inferior software for ideological reasons.

wish file rusher looks fine.
Very quick (at least on my fast system), very small, everything you need to manage files.
Also large folders like /usr/lib/ are shown very quick.
Runs without further packages in NYP02 midi.

Here is an icon for Tux Commander and my 'gui' settings file (in /root/.tuxcmd/) from where you can get the colors I used: I hope they fit with Deep Thought orange theme.
