Pigdin is the instant messanger Gaim, it had to be renamed due to copyright-issues.

[Pigdin] Gaim...had to be renamed due to copyright-issues.
that's wild. they are clearly two different words (Gaim vs. AIM [in my opinion]).

...and AOL has always been a succubus. back to the dark abyss with them.

Sorry, phantrongnghia, but your version of Pidgin was compiled without ssl support, and so it won't connect to MSN. You would need to recompile with libssl-dev included, I believe.

that's really stupid, that "AIM" is a trade mark can't we use *aim* type of names. do not use the word CLAIM or you might get sued. How come can they be so dumb?

http://download.35mb.com/point2play/pidgin-2.0.2.pup

I cannot mirror, as that site requires a plugin to download.
I don't install such plugins for security reasons.

Pidgin 2.02 dotpups

#11 Post by eddie_konczal »

I get this error when trying to launch: pidgin-2.0.2.pup

"File integrity ERROR: pidgin-2.0.2.pup
Suggestion: Download the Pup file again."

I tried downloading it again, same error!

file is ok, just checked it.
Please download with wget:
wget -c http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Instant_Messa ... -2.0.2.pup

then check the checksum:
md5sum pidgin-2.0.2.pup

this should give:
sh-3.00# md5sum pidgin-2.0.2.pup
7ccfb9b3bddbfd06867c6815ccc48fdc pidgin-2.0.2.pup

Pidgin 2.02 dotpups

#13 Post by eddie_konczal »

I tried again, this time using

http://exepacker.freeweb7.com/pubs/pidgin-2.0.2.zip

I was able to unzip the file, and install the DotPop by browsing to it in Rox. It installed to "usr/local/pidgin" and put an icon on the Menu under Dotpops.

But when I try to launch Pidgin, either from menu/dotpups or directly from usr/local/pidgin, nothing happens!

i will try again using the wget command you suggested.

:?
Thanks, Eddie

It is important to write down exact messages you get in the console.

I tried it myself now, and got:
sh-3.00# pidgin
sh-3.00# pidgin: error while loading shared libraries: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
We only have an older version of gstreamer.
Because I'm curious, I installed:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Internet/Gaim ... er-0.8.pup

Then I fooled pidgin to see this version 0.8 as 0.10 by typing this command:
ln -s /usr/lib/libgstreamer-0.8.so /usr/lib/libgstreamer-0.10.so.0

This is no good solution, because this can crash applications that use gstreamer.

But at least pidgin starts now.
It might crash if you use sound, did not try.
We need a libgstreamer dotpup, maybe Tui can create one?

Another issue:
it is problematic, to put spaces in a filename.
Tui might repackage the dotpup with calling the startscript "Pidgin-Internet-Messenger" instead of "Pidgin Internet Messenger".
Or it does not show up in the dotpups-menu.

Pidgin 2.02 dotpups

Mark,

Thanks for the reply, I executed Pidgin from the command prompt and got the exact same error.

I also renamed the file to a name without spaces - same error!
Regards Eddie

yes, you need that library.
Solution1 (not recommended):
Do it the bad way I described.

Solution2 (better):
install gslapt:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=11929

Run it.
In the options, go to "sources", remove slacky.it
Add this location:
http://www.slacky.eu/repository/slackware-11.0/

Confirm, and "refresh".
Now enter "gstreamer" in the searchfield.
Check the checkbox on the "gstreamer" package -> install.

Then click on "execute".
Now it will install a correct version of gstreamer, and you can start pidgin by dragging /usr/local/bin/pidgin on your desktop.

It is late at night here, so no dotpup, must sleep...

Pidgin (Gaim instant messenger) 2.02 dotpups

#17 Post by eddie_konczal »

I followed the directions in the last post and everything works a treat!

I was concerned when I saw the error message when selecting "Install" for "gstreamer":

glibc-solibs, which is required by gstreamer, is excluded

But it allowed me to continue and install gstreamer and I can now launch Pidgin!

Then I was able to follow these directions;
http://www.google.com/support/talkgadge ... swer=24073

Cheers!

fine :-)

Yes, the solibs I deactivated. They would break Puppy, so they cannot be installed.
Like this gstreamer thinks the dependencies are not met, and tells you this error.
But it can be ignored, as Puppy has these libs already in an own version.

Glad it works.

No preferences

Tis true, I can't figure out any way to access the preferences dialogue without Pidgin crashing immediately. Any sort of workaround? Or are other people not encountering this bug?
