Puppy Linux and the Puppy PC

Now before anyone gets their undies in a bunch the Puppy PC name is just an idea (as is this whole concept) although if we can get it to work I would aprecciate the opportunity to use the name.

Imagine only having to buy as much PC as you needed.
Imagine not having to worry about the kids deleting your emails or that document you've spent the last 3 months working on.
Imagine a PC with no moving parts, thats expandable to fit your needs.

The Puppy PC in its native form would run Puppy PC directly from USB keys. The mini-ITX system would start off with 512Mb RAM, and fanless motherboard, network interface, USB sockets and thats about it.

The majority of home users want email, internet, messaging, the occasional spreadsheet/wordprocessor document/presentation, maybe some filesharing and freecell.

But the current trend is for dual-core-mega-giga-superfast-dvd-burning-bluetoothing-firewiring-sd-card--reading-big-ugly-box-that-costs-the-best-part-of-a-thousand-bucks-and-will-need -upgrading-in-6-months-and-dont-get-me-started-on-Vista.

Why not buy a fanless diskless PC for around $300 with a USB key for every member of the family (anything from 512Mb to 4Gb). That way if little johnny deletes a file, its his file, not yours, yours is safely stashed on your key out of harms way.

As well as the PC you will be able to buy the matching media box. Dimensionally identical the tiny PC but this time housing a DVD/RW drive that connects via USB. Only necessary if you want to watch movies on DVD or burn CD's/DVD's otherwise you dont need it so you dont have to buy it.

Need permanent storage space, a dimensionally identical disk box is also available. Holding 1 x 3.5" or 2 x 2.5" hard disks, also connected by USB, you can have as much or as little mass storage as you like.

Online backup is available for those that want it, but if you dont want it you dont have to have it.

All in all its a modular system that is linux based, although with the addition of the disk box and media box it will hapilly run Windoze (though I dont see why you would want to).

Prototype home-user cases are being produced as we speak but I would imagine that being entirely moving part free such sytems could be used anywhere, cars, boats, ferris wheels, atvs etc etc.

Thats the idea for now but any new ideas are most definately welcomed.

You're absolutely right, a fanless pc is not original, but then neither is puppy. What it is though is a great community focussed improvement on the basic idea that evolves around the wishes of its users.

The modular design saves people buying a bunch of components they dont want while allowing those that do want mass storage and multimedia to add it with the minimum of fuss. A regular PC will take 4 ide devices and 4 SATA drives. USB allows multiple daisychained drives that are easily added by the users.

I tried getting DSL to be persitant and save the changes I made but it was way too complicated. Puppy does it right off the bat. The modular PC when coupled with puppy will take Linux to the masses and make smaller, quieter, more environmentally friendly PC's the norm.

I've recently sorted out how to get a USB stick puppy to run on both my mainframe and laptop.

The mainframe supports usb boot. The laptop doesn't.

So the idea of taking a usb flash drive plus an 8 cm CD on a 3000 mile trip, instead of a laptop is very attractive to me.

Puppy is now becoming more modular with sfs and more expertise developing.

Raffy has very much introduced Puppy to manufacturers in the Far East with ideas such as minipup http://bexa.org/pup/

Puppy is completely evolutionary. If hardware exists that optimises the experience, this is good.

Many users try Puppy on a second system. To their amazement it works faster and more usably than their main system.
