Here's the two logos with Vincent, side by side for comparison.

Certainly I prefer the one on the right. The tail is not really necessary - friendly, but a more solid impression without.

Nice work, thanks,

I dunno folks but did you get a close look at CutePup's avatar? Now that's creative!

Where on earth did you find that CutePup? I hope you don't mind but I just HAD to save a copy of that!

Take a look at Wolvix

#185 Post by Henry »

Wolvix is a "grown-up" version of Slax.

Not as small as Puppy, but loads into ram, and is about the slickest thing I've seen. Easy to use and elegant in design!

Anyone working on Puppy, including logo designers, ought to look at it.

Incidentally, it's another example of the over pawpular paw in logo.

Thanks for the wallpapers and the links CutePup! :) The wallpapers are great---and I saved all the pics of the flower puppies as those are so adorable they melt the heart! My grandkiddos are here today playing in the pool so before they leave I'll have to show them the flower puppies as I just KNOW they'll love them! :)

Again: Thanks so very much as those really made my day and placed a big smile on my face. :D

Oh yeah... I guess I didn't get the cartoon about the computer geek getting his wife (or girlfriend) the flowers. But then and again---what can you expect from a man? LOL!

It's simple: They doesn't looks like a puppy(both), it looks like an older one :?

And, have you seen this? it looks more like Vincent(the new real puppy)

Without any doubt the best choice for me: modern, simple, elegant. That makes me think to the BSD logo change from the old flat red ball to the modern 3d one...

A good background image does not automatically become a good logo.
A good logo must looks good (distinctive and clear) both as background, icon, button, either plain or in squares, circles, light or dark background, big and small.

As far as Puppy is concerned, that second one from the right works very well. I like it. I would love to see that incorporated in the next version of Puppy somehow. It really looks good.

I agree as well, Vincent in the second from right, is done in excellent fashion CutePup, and I hope someone from "The Powers That Be" are watching/reading as I, too, would love to see this used in a future Puppy version. (Hmm... maybe the new 2.20?)

Truly an awesome graphics job well excuted!

RasterPax has the idea of designing a logo down to a fine art, I think, I would go with his work. Not keen on the Puppy logo actually being a Puppy, it's a bit of a literal interpretation. It's better if it's a bit elusive, so I love the way he's interpreted the Puppy face.

For example, if Puppy was called 'Lion' a picture of an actual lion would be the obvious choice, but the scratch marks from a lions paw slashed across the screen would have a much more memorable impact,

I agree with "eob" the "rastapax" image gets high marks for simplicity and ease of recognition.

As for "cutepup's" comparison, just because a black image does not show up well on all possible backgrounds does mean that it is not a good logo choice.

After all the I seen the "Apple" logo rendered in a rainbow of colors over the years. The "rastapax" image could be given the same freedom and let the image color change to suite the application.

A logo must represent the company in many different contexts and still get the message across. In order to be recognizable, the logo must be distinct and easy to read on various medias.
A logo may be seen on the web, on the screen, in a brochure, on a t-shirt, on a pen, or on glassware. It could be used on dark backgrounds, on light backgrounds, on textured surfaces, or in various sizes like on a business card or on a large billboard (what's the use of a logo that can hardly recognizable?).
It should stand the test of time. A trendy look might work now, but 5 years later it might look dated (that's why Apple Inc. has dumped the rainbow colored logo).
Furthermore, it must connects with the qualities and history of the company.
Vincent does it all, it represent a puppy, simple, distinctive even on various background, its a classic, and most important is: Vincent is BK's dog in REAL life! (nobody could diminished this fact).

Nice work and discussion, Cutepup. Would you have links to higher resolution images (among other builds such as transparent icons) of Vincent as you showed here?

Worth noting that RasterPax gets (by far) the most votes.
