Can I remote into Puppy server from my iMac?

#1 Post by NRaygun »

I just downloaded and booted up Puppy on an old K6-500 system. All I can say is - WOW! It's lightning fast on the web. Job well done!

I have a few PCs in the basement running various things including this Puppy machine. Upstairs I use an iMac as my main system.

Is there a way to run some sort of Remote Desktop Server so I can remote into the Puppy PC from my iMac?

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

If you only need to control puppy from the command line you may want to install the SSH daemon for puppy

If you want to remote graphically then you may want to consider installing the
VNC server
I am sure that there is a VNC client for mac.

I'm afraid that it was I who added the term "VPN" to the subject line, out of ignorance. Once it becomes clear what the term should be, I'll change it, if NRaygun doesn't beat me to it.

Is there a more generic term than VPN that gets NRaygun's meaning across?

Hey, I just try to make the topic headings as indicative as my understanding of the post, and plain English, will allow. Sometimes I have to guess at what the writer meant - to fill in the blanks, as it were.

You too can be a moderator, blade. Just ask JohnM.

Of course, I don't know what was the original subject, but the appropriate term is in his post:

This is exactly what he is asking for. And it is the appropriate plain english description for what NRayGun wants to do.

Just curious: What was the original subject?

Doh! I'm afraid I forgot. Obviously if I don't know anything about the subject I should leave the subject line alone, but I wanted to make sure that anyone who knew about the topic would read the post. Thanks for setting me straight.

Whoa - looks like alot of activity going on here.

First of all, no probs on changing the subject. You're the moderator.

I dont know what the original subject was, but now it looks OK.

I think you guys get the basic idea of what I want to do. I want to be able to use the Remote Desktop Client that is part of Tiger to access my Puppy box.

Here are some specifics:

iMac G5 w/ Tiger 10.4.2
Mac Remote Desktop Connection client version 1.0.3

I am able to access my XP box and my Win2K server using the above system and client.

Is VNC still the answer?

Thanks for your help.

VNC is still one of the answers, although I don't think you can use the Remote Desktop Client against a VNC server, but you can try. Otherwise you can always use a VNC client for OS X.

Here are some links to VNC clients for mac OS X:
http://homepage.mac.com/kedoin/VNC/VNCViewer/
http://www.redstonesoftware.com/vnc.html
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/

and some more. If none of those satisfy your requirements you can google for "VNC for MAC OS X".

I've used VNC to connect to Puppy from Macs and it works quite well.
