ive revisited thsi . ive been to linuxprinting.org adn there is an updated gutenprint driver
so ive downloaded and rpm
gutenprint-5.0.1-1lsb3.1.i486.rpm

what next to install it ?

does clicking the .rpm open it using xarchive? if not, do you have midnight commander installed? or just move the file to a temporary directory & unrpm it. Then copy across the extracted files to their proper locations. (midnightCommander & unrpm are both available as dotpups).
