Unable to extract file with é in name from rar archive

The file name in the archive is French I guess but it is an english archive. When trying to extract it says cannot create file.
The file name is communiqué with the stroke above the e.
Is there a way around this? Have I done something to Rox? Or is there a way to change the name?

Try changing the name. I think that will work. If it doesn't, I don't see what harm it would cause.

The problem file name is in the rar archive, not the name of the archive. I have not found a way to change the name within the archive. Can it be done with unrar ?

This situation is a serious flaw in Puppy.
In ROX f.e. only files names in UTF8 are considered. Others with accentuated characters in it give error indications. I have this as I use a common partition (vfat) on an external drive between Linux and Windows.
In spite of the error indication I can open the file however.

So it could be that you can unrar the archive in spite of the error about the name and that you open the file anyway.

If not, I don't see any solution right now.

Yes, I have seen before where Rox creates the file, highlights it in red and warns the file name should be changed.

However, in this case Rox refuses to even create the file.

Is there a way of changing the name within the archive or truncating the name on extraction or something?

Another thought: I suppose you use the correct locale for French?

Also did you create the archive yourself in Windows?
If yes you could rename in Windows and archive again.

Well I solved my particular problem here.
I downloaded a newer UNRAR binary from
http://www.rarlab.com/rar/unrar-3.7.5-i486-1.tgz
Replacing the old one in /usr/bin with this and I was able to extract the file and then rename it.
The old UNRAR binary version 3.40 did not display the file name when the list command was used but the new version 3.7 does.

I also saw a full RAR binary there which says it can rename files within an archive. This binary appears to run happily in Puppy. It is listed as shareware so I guess that is why it is not included in Puppy.

In retrospect I find it funny that I spent almost a whole day on this and I really was celebrating when I achieved my huge victory of managing to remove a tiny stoke above a letter. Or should that be tragic?

I am glad I don't run into more of these things in Australia. It must get to be a real annoyance for you there with Holland and Germany near you to provide even more weird hats for letters to confuse Rox with.

Newcrest, there is no problem at all. Keyboards provide the mean to enter the accentuated characters easily.

Hardware and software products comply to National Language Support.
So every thing is normally tuned.

Unfortunately Puppy and applications chosen don't comply to National Language Support.
ROX is one example of it.

From a commercial aspect, Puppy wouldn't have a chance to survive for this reason.

Having been a product manager for HW and SW products for commercialization in Belgium, I know the pain it is to convince US developers (in fact any English only developers) that National Language Support is a must. Some of them don't (or don't want) to know what it is.
