Galician localization
Galician localization
I was thinking to start the Galician (gl) translation but first I need to know if somebody is working on it. Congratulations for this useful distro.

Re: Galician localization
Hi i read only 3 million people speak Galician and I would say your on your own, but if you want a hand with certain things, I'll do my best. I'm always willing to lend a hand if needed.mmeixide wrote:I was thinking to start the Galician (gl) translation but first I need to know if somebody is working on it. You are right, 3 million here in Galiza (NW Spain)... and about the same number spread around the whole world (mostly in South America and Europe) . Thanks for offering help. As a first step, I will try to get more galicians involved. I would like to have an idea of how much work it would be... if it is affordable for only one person or not.... just to know how many collaborators I need (if any)

Sorry I went on vacation and also I've been sick with a cold, what i have found so far is.
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SpanishLanguage <--- Puppy Spanish
Got it from http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 15&t=13695
1.) Puppys inbuilt scripts/wizards
They have no external languagefiles, so you must rewrite them.
This is not recommended, as the next update would overwrite your translation.
Instead, you should reprogram them, using variables instead of fixed strings.
Then send the modified version to the author (usually Barry or Plinej or me).
In Muppy this is not done yet, it will remain the last, most work-intensive step.
2.) add locale-files
/usr/lib/locale
You can install them with chooselocale, or add missing files like utf-8 from another distro.
3.) add languagefiles for applications like leafpad
Many apps put their translations to
/usr/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/
or
/usr/local/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/
Some are here:
http://dotpups.de/files/various-locale-files/
Others you might extract from Debian, Knoppix, Slackware.
A special case is Abiword:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 9888#69888
4.) Menu:
Muppy uses .desktop-entries in
/usr/share/applications
Those can include a translation ("XDG-menus").
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=abiword
Icon=abiword_48.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Office;WordProcessor;GNOME;GTK;X-Red-Hat-Base;
StartupNotify=true
Encoding=UTF-8
X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.9
MimeType=application/x-abiword;text/x-abiword;text/x-xml-abiword;text/plain;application/msword;application/rtf;application/vnd.plain;application/xhtml+xml;text/html;
Name=AbiWord
GenericName=Word Processor
Comment=AbiWord Word Processor
Name[de]=Textverarbeitung-ö
Comment[de]=AbiWord Textverarbeitung
Name[nb]=Tekstbehandling
Comment[nb]=AbiWord Tekstbehandling
JWM does not use those, I use a extended Icewm for that.
For JWM use:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=7165
That should get you going.

Thank you very much for your advice!!! I am not sure that I know linux enough to do that, but I will try. I went on vacation also, and now I think I am starting to be sick with a cold, so I don't feel clever at all. Following one of that links I found a program to translate the menu, Puppymenu-translator... and I have translated it. So far, so good. When it was finished, I did run the program but there were no changes at all in the Menu None of the languages included with the translator did work. So, now I feel tired, sick and lost.
This week I will be quite busy, I have to travel 2 or 3 days, but next week I will start again to fight with this "locale" bussines.

and edit _root_.icewm_menu and _root_.jwmrc
also /root/jwmrc
then save it and go to a terminal and type fixmenus then reset JWM or Icewm and that should be it for the menu thing.

I have found that, but I am not sure about what to translate... only things between "" "" ? as in _root_.icewm_menu: "Desktop" or "System" or "Setup" or "Restart with Evilwm"?if you permantly want to change the menu then go to /etc/xdg/templates
and edit _root_.icewm_menu and _root_.jwmrc
And in _root_.jwmrc : label="Restart X server" and so on?
I am not sure if that are the items to translate.
Do you mean .jwmrc, I think. And I guess that I have to translate also the labels there.also /root/jwmrc
I would prefer to make changes that could be used in following versions, but I don't know if that could be done (or if I am able to do it)if you permantly want to change the menu then
I am sorry if I am wasting your time, but I have no much experience with linux...thanks again anyway.

I would save those files separately just encase your remaster doesn't work right. Saves a lot of redoing:) then it is possibly to make a pet package to replace those on a regular puppy 3 release, But it would only work right if every program is identical, say if Barry drops Gxine and replaces with Mplayer and you put your translations over-top, In the menu section it would say Gxine Player and the link would be dead. and No Mplayer. The way I would do it is open both in 2 text editors side by side and compare and copy and paste. etc still a lot quicker.:0)
have fun ttuuxxx

If it is of interest, Pburn, Pbackup and Pfind support translation. MU is working hard with other Puppy scripts like the network setup... Look out for Mighty MU.
