How to start cups installed from dotpup?

#1 Post by gerry »

Puppy 214R 1.00:

I downloaded and installed the cups-install dotpup by pakt. Two problems: it insists that the .ppd file in root is wrong format for cups, even though it works in 3.01 (and Debian). I can probably fix that, but the dotpup starts cups automatically when it is installed, so that you can install your printer. In my case, I didn't manage to, and now I want another go but: how do I start cups again? Can't see any way to do it!

There's no menu entry. Going to Localhost:631 does not work (presumeably the dotpup disables that).

Open a console and enter

/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start

hit return..

this should run cups and you should be able to access via your browser to setup your printer.

If this doesn't work the install may have gone wrong so try running it again.

Thanks...

/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start got me "Permission denied". Huh, in Puppy??

Fixed the permissions, and then it runs, but then... please expand on how to use the browser to access cups- all I can find is the on-line version.

http://localhost:631/ or http://localhost:631/admin with your web browser...

you should get a screen with an option to add a printer.

If the file permission was wrong it may mean the install didn't complete.

Localhost 531 still gets the on-line version, that does not allow use of user-supplied .ppd file and driver, which is the vital feature that I need.

I think I'll scrub everything, and start again (not too big a problem with live cd).

Well a custom ppd can be put in /usr/share/cups/model/C/ , cups
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups stop
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
restarted and then the new ppd will be available in the drop down list when setting up the printer via the online interface.

As for drivers it seems like cups covers everything but perhaps /usr/lib/cups/backend would be the place to look

No, cups does not cover Canon i965 printer, have to download from Canon Japan, as an rpm file.

Even then, only printing works, not the ink level monitoring and so on.
