@ Willhunt,
Did you mean there is no ndiswrapper in the normal install?

Embarassed I misspoke I've just been using it so long I missed a upgrade
somewhere because no devx_008.sfs was needed ndiswrapper in muppy_008
as for your dastardly dongle maybe this link will help Puppy Extras

Thanks Will. So everything should have been working... My wireless thingy is supported via ndiswrapper or prism2_usb in other Linuxes (Mandrake, Ubuntu, etc.) according to what I read on the 'net, but somehow Muppy/Puppy doesn't seem to like it. It's not in Puppy Extras, presumably because prism2_usb is meant to do the job, and has been for most other people with DWL-122s on other Linuxes.

So anyway... I am supposed to plug this thing in, then type
Code:
modprobe prism2_usb
to which the console replies
Code:
FATAL: module prism2_usb not found.

Puppy Network Wizard says it's there, but loading it fails. I know it's a Prism 2 card from selling and supporting the DWL-122 (and the G122) for Mac users - my unit works on our iMac G4 (OS X 10.4) and Dell Pentium 2 laptop (Win XP Pro), and flash drives work on this Puppy box, so I must be doing something wrong, but what?

What do you mean when you say you clean your old pup_saves?

while booted on the new pup save file I run these command against
the Old pup save file
Code:

e2fsck -p /mnt/home/Old_pup_save.2fs
mount -o loop /mnt/home/Old_pup_save.2fs /mnt/data
then I open gtkfind and remove all the
.wh. files
then you just squash the old pupsave file with
Code:

mksquashfs /mnt/data /mnt/home/old_pup_save.sfs

And if I still need devx_008.sfs how would I get it on the boot CD?

I use the program ISOMaster from the multimedia menu and add the devx_080.sfs
and save the new iso and the burn it works great

Quote:
And, when you mount them do you get their functionality back?

sometimes it allows me to copy thing out of the /usr directory into the
new /usr directory sometimes they work sometimes they don't I just don't
have the skill to know until I try it Sad

@Aboodoo
yes ndiswrapper should work "out of the box"
I borrowed a linksys dongel and on my machine here is what I found out. If I boot with the dongle already in the machine then
it worked just fine but inserting after the boot gave me no joy Sad
I really wish I could be more help but wireless confuses me also
have you tried the script by Barburo posted earlier in this thread?
the author of the puppy extras is the goto man on this subject
other than that it may have to wait till the Master of Mayhem Mu himself returns from vacation Again I wish I could be more help Sad
on the other hand are loading zmsy_080.sfs? if you are then you
should you see the file /pinstall.linux_wlan_ng-0.2.8.sh if not your zmsy_080.sfs file is not loading for some reason?

I burned a LiveCD of the final version....boots up works fine.

But, when I attempted tp create an iso through the remaster program I notice that mys_080.sfs is not found (instead I see pup_080.sys) and there is no zmsy_080.sfs on the burned CD.

Any hints on what I can do to create an iso after I'm made changes and additions to the system?

Thanks

One teeny-weeny problemette however: http://etc.etc links in emails have no effect

just run sylpheed and open the configuration>Common Preferences>Details>External commands
and edit the Web Rowser statement to read
Code:
/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser -remote 'openURL(%s,new-window)'

Fantastic! It now works a treat, so many thanks.

Oh, and a Happy New Year to everyone!

Happy new year Smile

Ok, I'm back online.
First:
thanks for the detailed feedback.
I will try to help where I can in the next 2 days with quick issues, and have a closer look in the next days on more complicated problems.

Second: special thanks to WillHunt for his engagement in helping so much Smile

About the current status:
while I was offline, I fixed bugs in GtkBasic.
It was not possible to destroy objects, what could result in crashes in more complex programs.
As GtkBasic will be used to write new utilities for Muppy, this was important.
I still need to add some smaller changes, but the most is done, so I will upload the fixed GtkBasic this weekend.
I also wrote a kind of "plugin" system for widgets like the Analog-Clock.
Now a widget will no longer start its own GtkBasic, but all widgets use one single instance. This reduces memory-usage. The Widgets are intended to make the desktop more "intuitive". For example they will replace the memory-consuming tray-buttons I released a while ago.
I will upload the new code in some days.

Beside that, now I got feedback from companies that intend to use Muppy.
The most important issue is localization.
The highest priority now will be to translate Puppys Wizards to german.
This means: please do not expect new programs soon, the next weeks will be full of work in fixing the reported bugs and rewriting existing programs for easier localization.

Thanks everyone for reporting their experiences.
Mark

And a Happy New Year to you too Mark. I hope that you had an enjoyable break. Very Happy

Sadly I have a couple of bugs to report. Sad

1. gxine is broken and crashes when you try to play an audio CD or listen to the radio. It just bombs out : no error message, nothing.

I don't know whether it's relevant but my laptop has the ever-troublesome hda-intel sound chip, so gxine may be a non-starter. All Puppy 3.01 based builds have given issues with audio.

2. burniso2cd is also broken. It starts OK and asks you to choose CD or DVD. Then shows an Xdialog window with all the usage options. See screenshot. And that's all it does.

Thanks.

Thanks, I had no closer look at gxine yet, as I prefer Mplayer, and gxine is known to be problematic. At moment I can't help with this issue.

To fix burn2iso, please try this:
edit /usr/sbin/burniso2cd

Around line 35, replace:
Code:
400x200 5 $SELECTIONX

with:
Code:
 20 60 $SELECTIONX

Then I get the intended menu.
It just shows my CD-burner twice then, but maybe it works for you?

open in leafpad:
/usr/sbin/remasterpup2

Use "search - replace"
check the checkbox: "Replace all at once".
Enter in the first entry:
pup_$
Enter in the second entry:
msy_$

Then click on "find and replace" and then save the file.

Now again, but now enter in the first entry:
zdrv
Enter in the second entry:
zmsy

Again, click on "find and replace" and then save the file.

This should do it, though I did not check it yet, so no guarantee.
Does it work for you?

So; mplayer it is then. I suggest in that case that the 'Play' icon on the desktop should be assigned to mplayer.

OK; I've had a go at that but I'm stumped at the first hurdle - where's the menu? It says 'No media opened' but how do I tell it to open my CD and play it? See screenshot for all I get. Is that normal?

Well it got further, but still didn't work as it stuck in cdrecord trying to open the drive. See screenshot.

you get the mplayer-menu with a rightclick.

For the burner I must check the code later, to compare what is different in Puppys Xdialog and the one from Muppy.
Somehow the resulting choices seem to have a different format, what breaks the name of the cd-recorder.

Thanks.

Well, that sort-of works, but either I'm still doing it wrong, or there's a long way to go with getting mplayer to "just do it".

My experience was this :- I could not find the option to play an audio CD directly, but there was the possibility of playing from a file. So I ripped the whole CD to a folder structure to represent Genre => Artist => Album => Tracks. Giving this structure to mplayer worked but it only played the first track. Irrespective of the track I selected it played the first one!

So I then tried to create a playlist in mplayer with all the tracks. This was just the same, so I got to listen to the first track lots of times. Luckily it's a very nice track. Razz

So; is it me? Is there something I am failing to do by way of setup, or is there a real problem here?

Jan 8th update :-

Sadly I've found a couple more issues with Muppy008 Sad .

1. Disk Free seems broken: at least the desktop icon does nothing.

2. Something in the boot process is swamping free memory. My 1Gb of RAM is almost full before loading any application at all. I have many .sfs file for other Puppies; are these being loaded into RAM too? There's something seriously amiss here.

Yes...thanks a lot....works fine, and the same type of change works with other distros. Now, the fun part....having to copy from /root/ all the stuff that the remaster script doesn't copy to /tmp/root/

If I knew more about the commands, I could add it into the script, but for now I have to do it manually.
