It has no taskbar, instead it uses small icons.
So you might like to use it with the Gnome-panel.
lxpanel can not display a taskbar in windowmaker.

Start it with
xwin wmaker

Issues:
You can run a config-tool, it is the 3rd icon from top on the right side.
It does not display pictures.
This is a bug you can find often in google, but I found no solution.

After touring window managers again, I return to Windowmaker! It's the only one that's easy enough for me.

I haven't tried this Puppy one, but am about to. I run Windowmaker in Debian Linux (Sidux) but learned to love it in Suse Linux.

I found out how to display pictures in the Window Maker Preferences utility.

I noted that Windowmaker seemed to expect the icons in this directory:

/usr/local/GNUstep/Applications/WPrefs.app/

On another computer, I discovered a /tiffs directory that contained the icons needed

In Puppy, I had to create some empty directories to imitate the path that Windowmaker expected.

Then I put the /tiffs directory and the icons in it in

/usr/local/GNUstep/Applications/WPrefs.app/tiffs

And the picures appeared! As a bonus, you get a slider that gives you more options than you have without pictures.

That seems to solve the problem. There is probably a better solution, but I accept working!

By the way, if anyone tries to install the Windowmaker pup above, note that the command you use to start it, after ctrl-alt-backspace to get out of your other window manager, is

xwin wmaker

I first tried xwin windowmaker but it's no big surprise that didn't work.

Windowmaker is great and easy and I don't understand why its popularity ebbed.

I've been using windowmaker for years and it has me so spoiled with its' good beahoviour that I find it hard to use anything else. Sometimes I play around a few minutes with icewm and it would be my second choice.

In particular, I have most of the patches ever available for wmaker -the best feature to add is the command history for the run box.
I also got the sound server working so you can have desktop sound events.

Another very intersting thing is that I run wmaker without the dock or the clip. I can still use dockapps, but they are not in the dock. This cuts down on desktop clutter and menory usage.

My< desktop consists of the ROX-Filer-1.2 for the desktop icons, wmaker and a panel -either taskbar or fbpanel. Very nice and intuitive to use.

I have a collection of nearly 60 DockApps here:

All of these DockApps are updated to run correctly with wmaker-0.92.

I also have miniwindows disabled so that there is never any extra clutter on the desktop -otherwise each running applixation will show an extra icon -a minimized apps shows two! I let the panel handle minmized windows so I don't need the mini-windows.

The above should be the contents of your WMWindowAttributes file in your HOME/GNUstep/Defaults directory. You should edit the file to have that content while *not* running windowmaker.
