Pizzapup: Who's interested?

#1 Post by Pizzasgood »

I've successfully set up my own remastered Puppy. It is just mostly a normal 1.0.1 (so all those annoying kernal problems won't be included :)), but:
1. Comes preloaded with Firefox
2. Comes preloaded with IceWM
3. Comes with Timidity
4. Comes with GuestToo's wallpaper roxapp
5. I removed Beaver (Lobsters around the world let out a sigh of relief...)
6. Put in JohnMurga's bootmenu
7. Added my new, less frightening splash screen
8. A couple icons have been modified
9. Includes my somewhat inefficient, but usable, version of a remaster script.
10. It's about 71 megabytes at the moment.

This is all succeptable to change, as I'm still tweaking it. I'm probably going to remove mozilla (Firefox and sylpheed are good enough for me. I use Leafpad for html), so that should free up some more room.

If anyone is interested, I'll see about getting it uploaded when I'm done. I'm going on vacation on Saturday, though, and won't be back until July 31, so if I haven't finished by tomorrow evening it probably won't happen. Chances are I'll get done today, though.

Hey,

I have been very busy this week, but I am going set up a new forum for "Unleashed" and unleashers such as yourself.

I think it would be good for people to have variety on offer :-)

I for one would have a play with your ISO

Cheers

If you get it uploaded that means good karma (I can put in a good word with the Buddha Metta Ray - the Future Buddha)

Get the broad canvas working. I am already salivating [not a pretty sight]

i could have used sed to edit .xinitrc for my wallpaper setting program, but i didn't ... i simply replaced .xinitrc with my own (i backed up the old .xinitrc)

i found that renicing X to -10 worked well with Puppy, so i had a renice line in .xinitrc

but the 2.6 kernel shouldn't need it ... in fact, it should run better if X is not reniced to -10 ... the 2.6 kernel is supposed to handle resource allocation better, and it does seem to work better than 2.4

i just thought i would mention it, so you can decide whether to leave the renice line in or not

i can easily make an Icewm Unleashed package ... about the only reason i haven't, is deciding what minor tweaks to include ... in particular, what themes to include with the basic package (there can be other packages with extra stuff like the standard themes, more themes, icewmtray, icedock ...)

in fact, i'm running from my own unleashed Puppy right now ... i took out fvwm95, jwm, mozilla, put in icewm, and run Firefox 1.0.4 and Opera 8 from another partition on my hard drive

Firefox or Opera or Mozilla (you just have to download and unzip Mozilla suite 1.7.8 to run it, just like Firefox ... it's all in one dir) could easily be installed from an installer package on the cd

i could easily make an distribute an iso (probably by bit torrent ... ctorrent works well, i tried downloading a Xandros iso yesterday, directly to a vfat partition ... it worked perfectly ... and i find i don't need the throttle the upload speed the way i need to if i use bit torrent in Win XP ... i was getting 300 kBs down while uploading at my top speed of 84 kBs ... on XP i usually have to throttle it to about 64 kBs up)

if you want a good product, that works well, and is polished, about 90% (more like 98%) of your time will be spent testing and tweaking and polishing, and documenting, and bug-fixing

That reminds me, I need to update Firefox. As for the vacation, I visit my dad over summer break. He doesn't have internet access though, so unless he decides to get a cheep modem I'll only be able to get online when I'm at my grandma's (and that's if she got her computer fixed yet).

Okay, I've been persuaded. I'll try to pull it all togeather tonight and try uploading overnight.

Nah, that's okay. It's nice to be away from all the technology once in a while. Kick back and "relax" on the farm. (I get to rest my brain and excercise my brawn) Until recently, we only got four or five stations on his tv. Now we get about ten. :) Believe it or not, though, I actually watch more tv there than I do at Mom's with cable. I'm usually too busy on my computer to watch tv (Saturday evening cartoons is about it). Besides, computer is healthier. With tv, you just veg out, when I'm programming or reading I actually have to think.

Anyway, after accidently deleting my entire temp directory (it needed to be cleaned out anyway...), I think I worked out all the bugs from my remastering script. I'm just about done with Pizzapup too. I need to update the remaster script to fix that last bug, make Puppy bark, and remove the part that sets up my personal ndiswrapper settings. I think that's it. I'll wait a little bit just to make sure, though. It'll be done tonight, no doubt about it.

Done. Now I just need to upload it.

The vacation is called "Summer Break." It's what happens when I'm in-between 11th grade and 12th grade. My dad lives out of state (he's in Minnesota, I'm in Georgia), so I stay with him on the farm over summer. If you ask me, it's not long enough. Oh well.

Now, to go upload this thing...

Where are you uploading it too? I looked on your web site, didn't see it.
Looking forward to checking it out!

That's because it conked out. FTP wasn't working, so I had to use the site's control panel to try uploading it, but it didn't work. I'll try again. It will be at http://pizzasgood.jaywebdesigns.com/pizzapup/ if it works.

Did it, done it, done! It's uploaded to the directory posted above. I'm going to make a post in announcements describing it better, and then I'll add a post and link at my site too. Fortunately, I'm running on a Platinum plan (reward for sticking with my host though some bad times), so bandwith is unlimited. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to do this :)

Oh no... I just tried to download a copy, but I got a 404 error even though I saw the link. Anyone else have this happen?

Yeah. Dunno what the problem is. I had to redo the iso anyways to add the mime settings for midis, so I'm uploading it again now (54% complete, 40 minutes remaining).
