PDF guide>?

#1 Post by Alucard_the_dex »

In windows i downloaded many many PDF guides on how to optimize tweak config everything from streamlining windows to making it work with you not against you

most new pple Like myself wanna know these kinda things in a new enviroment fast and yesh yesh there are these forums but like i said "fast" And at that their own pace not needing to wait on others

plus it would counter windows in that department

if a couple pros with puppy linux got together and made a guide of their knowledge in simple PDF format (i say PDF cuz its handy and doesnt need a "certaint" OS to use) and link it up for download OR make it come pre loaded on puppy

I know you guys say the help file is large and informative but if im on a windows system without needing to surf the web for help i could just pop in a CD or floppy or pen drive with Foxit and awya i go to learn more about puppy

IDK if this idea has been done but i havent seen it anywheres yet i just get referd back to the help files so if it has been done Plz inform me

that was me anywho there could be two guides one for setting up puppy With full in detail info for every concept that a noob needs to know then there could be a hardcore Optimize puppy one the noob one could be printed and sent with the cd too

IDK but if we make puppy more "company" like pple wont be so scared of changing BUT we cant go to company like cuz then money would get involved and i think we all agree on wanting to keep it free i mean we can use some ideas without looking like a big "corporation" making puppy look more profesional instead of a little freeware OS

Sorry not to rag on how puppys set up but my first impresion and i bet including manys that puppy was a little unknown "toy" OS which can make alota pple not even download it

but truthfully i think all of our goals here is to spread puppy no>?

Just spittingout ideas as they come to me id love feedback on what you guys think positive or negative it no matter i just wanna know what pple think

Personally, I think PDF sucks. I prefer html.

Incidentally, the documentation that comes with Puppy (Puppy's "Help") is the best of any distribution I've seen.

Well as long as the format of the file can be used on any OS easily without internet that is highly reliable to work thats the main point i was trying to make and the last PDF guide i downloaded was just amazing so i was leaning towards PDF for that reason

For maximun protability you can't beat ascii :-)
Html would be my next pick as its readable with almost any editor, you only have to ignore all the html code, and it allows formating of the text and jumping around from chapter to chapter.
I have some manuals in .pdf here from a couple of years ago that ghost reader cant handle, if the html is kept simple that wont happen.

Its what a plain text file is written in, What edlin, edit and notepad all use any word processor can read it. Have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII for some interesting history.

What do you mean "no pics in notepad!" Have you never heard of ascii art? And you claim to be experienced with computers. Hah!

I think I'd prefer html, because I rarely use pdfs, so I am off balance in a pdf reader. With html, I can read in good old Firefox.

PDF is not suitable for a file that can grow to a large size, specially considering that puppy may be installed in computers with low specs.

PDF is a resource hog. Large documents take for ever to open, scroll and search in a decent computer. I cannot even imagin how it would be in a slow computer.

Creating hyperlinks in PDF is not easy either.

HTML is easy to create and edit, It can be accessed from any platform this days. It can grow any size and if it's well structured the requirements stay low. It's easy to modify and maintain and easy to distribute.

Yes, It does not give you 100 % control of the page layout. On the other hand, it does not force you to a specific page layout.

PDFs are good for brochures. Documentation is cumbersome in PDF.

I agree with you. PDF really sucks! One time, I have to go to an internet cafe to print a document, their pdf for windows didnt print the characters thats supposed to be there. Even we have change some settings, and layout for the printer it didnt do good either. Waste of time, waste of money :(

Funny thing Linux - you have to write you own manual - when you start - we join in - after all who did you think was going to write the beginners and new users section? PDF is for printed output, HTML is for screen output. I would start with ASCII (which I think stands for American Standard Character Information Interchange - I suppose I could look it up on Google but guess someone else will do it for me?) It is plain text only . . .

Come on guys - less jaw more paw

It could and does stand for Amsterdam Subversive Center for Information Interchange but most people know it as American Standard Code for Information Interchange like you said, but not just text, I used to have a stack of mark-sense cards that would print out a naked woman on a PDP11 it only used text though
