Phoenix CE - Revised Base available DEVELOPMENT STARTED

#1 Post by ecomoney »

Download Mirror (thanks to Eric)

http://www.puppylinux.ca/ttuuxxx/ecopup ... master.iso

Im glad to announce we have our first actual development! This is in the form of a revised 2.14r ISO with the following enhancements

Pbackup updated from 3.0 to 3.03
Pfind updated from 2.2 to 3.3
Removed Dillo and replace with skipstone as default html viewer
Installed ePDFview as default PDF viewer, Left Ghost view as a backup.
Installed Pburn 0.9.3
Installed Pnethood for easy Windows shares

Much appreciation to Ttuxxx for starting us down the development path with these additions. I have given it a quick test and can find no problems, a more thorough test would be appreciated before we progress.

How do we progress from here

The project has been organised into separate features. Each feature can be added separately. "Talking Stick" (where each person takes the stick to add their piece to the conversation) would have been a good analogy. I suggest that each individual module developer take the "Talking stick", and book out by placing a post in a main Development thread. This way we dont end up having additions made to two versions of the thread at the same time, that will have to be merged.

Many thanks to everyone for their participation so far.

Strictly in the interest of not wanting your little project to look foolish, you might want to run your topic through a spell checker. It's a little thing, but if you want to be taken seriously, such little things matter.

welcome news

This is good news.

About spelling = Phoenix (copy and paste please). Well, maybe simplify it to PHIX to avoid problems. :)

Thanks Roberts, thanks Ttuxxx, thanks guys :)

Anyone able to mirror / Bittorrent?

I am using Pwget in Dingo Alpha 6 to download
That can be included in Phoenix?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 340#167340
Is there other Dingo Code that would be useful?

the Bug page is very simple to modify (needs work)
as we will be supporting two Community editions
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TalkingStickBugs

Robert what do you feel are the priorities for the first alpha release?
How soon might that be? :)

as spelling goes, really does it matter in a forum? It does matter in the operating system, and some browsers like Opera, Seamonkey don't even have a default checker database its optional. Thats another reason why i like Firefox, sure its spelling checker isn't as good as Google but better than having nothing. Funny even Abiword you have to download a plugin for spelling, and its not even that large something around 500kb extracted, well that was in the 2.17 which i just finished messing around with. Some words like "distro" aren't in Firefox's spell checker. Kind of like windows office 2003 pro, that stupid dictionary doesn't have "Linux" in it. Maybe that was on purpose from Microsoft playing a joke.

Ok what would you like to see in the next release? I have a few idea's butttt I don't want to be the only contributor, so I'll hold back a bit:)

A working geany text editor please :)
I am in the base now . . .

I was adding the below points in Geany
I clicked on the Geany window and Geany just dissapeared - gone
Luckily the text was in the 'G' clipboard - so I suspect the clipboard to be the source of the trouble . . . .

I believe Barry was experiencing probs and dropped the clipboard . . .
Can we fix it? Yes we can! (Lob the Builder!)
  • can someone improve the log in html?
    file:///usr/share/doc/welcome1stboot.htm
Can we have a Geany editor icon on the desktop?
GTK theme selector (from Mu) excellent)
    Hey - Phoenix wallpaper please . . .
Interesting to see how people get on with the torrent creator . . .
More testers required and a working text editor is most important
Thanks Ttuxxx and everyone involved
Really very exciting to see your hard work on this :D

Hi
i'll fix the Geany editor icon on the desktop
and install the GTK theme selector (I was going to do this for the first release but i didn't know if i was over doing it :)
if you can give me some clue about what you wanted for the welcome1stboot.htm I could do that also, and any wallpapers you wanted or i could quickly make 1.
I have 2hrs so i'll get started.

It is already in there - I was commenting how good it was . . . :)
if you can give me some clue about what you wanted for the welcome1stboot.htm
I suggest you use a Phoenix logo
and add any comments about what you wish testing

a link to a relevant wiki page
and forum thread

I think Barrys original goals that Robert has adopted
should also be included:

Puppy's goals

* Easily install to USB, Zip or hard drive media.
* Booting from CD (or DVD), the CD drive is then free for other purposes.
* Booting from CD (or DVD), save everything back to the CD.
* Booting from USB Flash drive, minimise writes to extend the life indefinitely.
* Extremely friendly for Linux newbies.
* Boot up and run extraordinarily fast.
* Have all the applications needed for daily use.
* Will just work, no hassles.
* Will breathe new life into old PCs
* Load and run totally in RAM for diskless thin stations

I could do that also, and any wallpapers you wanted or i could quickly make 1.
If you have time by all means do one
I will try doing one in Phoenix Base . . .
Any more designers out there?

OK here is a wallpaper (did it in Phoenix Inkscape Lite)

You can see it here but it needs a thumbnail
(there is some way of doing that in the wiki) - if anyone is up for it?

I am just throwing more wood on the fire, In my 1922 very large dictionary you can spell it
Phoenix and also Phenix . it is a bird that flies around every 500 years, burns it,s "butt" and is renewed, just like Puppy, every 500 hours it is renewed.

You do not have to be an Eccentric to love Puppy but it helps.

Development

#19 Post by ecomoney »

Hi All, glad to see this thread has had so many additions. A text editior is more of a development tool than something a "linux newb" would require on a day to day basis, for that reason I think a desktop icon would distract rather than be useful to a normal day to day user.

Glipper I notice is now a Python App, this would require additional libraries and extra size? Its also a x.00 version, and Phoenix is based on stability. Im happy for geany to be updated to the latest version if it is stable.

Lobster, thank you for re-posting the project aims and objectives. I would like the final theme/wallpaper to be the subject of another thread. Puppy 3.02 Alpha looks superb when compared to other puppies, and it can be improved upon. I really want this thread to be about testing the base, and when it is complete, adding the features.

Currently skipstone works well, Im not sure however that the configuration is correctly set up, if someone would like to look at those. I think the home page could also be done with setting to something else. Eventually the default location when connected should be the Phoenix home page (there is a thread about this). I also experienced some problems today at work using it to download M$ Word files. Theres no default "open with" for files of different types.

Im just uploading a mirror copy to Ecomoney Systems Distribution server at

http://ecomoney.eu/phoenix/puppy-214-remaster.iso

Update... Previous edition, since upgraded, please see later in thread[/b]

Should be finished uploading by about 20:30 GMT

update

#20 Post by ttuuxxx »

Well when I was talking about installing the gtk theme chooser I was talking about the latest one, from Whodo, It had a lot more nicer themes, Actually if you compare, the default one has around 500kb of themes while whodo's latest is around 7MB. A bit overkill, so anyways i just transfered over 1 theme, Glossy P, It changes the looks of rox.
Then I said to myself why not make skipstone look like Glossy P, so I made a theme for skipstone and changed it, you can revert back if you wish in the menu under themes in skipstone:) Also i change the images within skipstone so it now has a Phoenix splash/intro screen. A more unified look one would think:)
next I installed Pwget as asked by Caneri :) The least we can do for one of the guys who really donates to puppy:)
--->The only problem with Pwget is that the clipboard doesn't work with skipstone and Pwget, Geany. So this should be looked into, It works fine with Seamonkey.
next i installed PSI since thats a great package manager.
--->The only Problem with P.S.I is that it updates fine, But when you go to download something it returns with a message "File Not Found" So that would have to be looked into.

2 new problems:) any takers

I added the wallpapers as asked
Added icons on the desktop for PSI,Pwget, Skipstone

I found when i tried to open small icons 16x16 Qiv was hiding some of the image, So i reverted xpm,png back to mtpaint as the default viewer for the smaller image formats, Qiv still opens jpg

I didn't have time for the splash screen, Also maybe someone else could do that one. I have to Teach today and also work on friday, and so Maybe saturday I might have free time.

If someone could look into the Menu structure that would be good also, since by default it out of order, and Calculate is missing, And pfind and a few others are in the wrong locations.

I placed the updated iso in the same location, name etc so we wouldn't have all different links all over, could be bad if someone was downloading the older version while i was moving it to a new folder, should i just give each release a new location ?

Here's the new release link
