F-prot installer

downloads F-prot antivirus program (about 4 megs)

run F-prot by clicking Start, Utilities, XF-Prot Virus Scanner

click the Update button to update the virus definitions

Edit: Oct 11, 2005 - version 0.0.3
- updater now downloads a virus definition update only if it has changed
- installs the symlink to /usr/local/f-prot if necessary

G2,

downloaded your f-prot pup successfully, ran XF-Prot shell & get :-

"error, /usr/local/f-prot/f-prot not found! Aborting". I have previously downloaded f-prot & tried untarring to both /root/my-applications/f-prot, (with XF-Prot giving me previous message), & to /usr/local/f-prot, (in this case no error message but XF-prot doesn't do anything).

XF-Prot isn't like where you have a flashing led & sign saying "alarm connected " is it? any ideas?

yes, you probably have an option 2 install, and it's probably slightly different from the real Puppy

in any case, there is supposed to be a symlink in the /usr/local/ folder, pointing to /root/my-applications/f-prot/

you can create the symlink by dragging the /root/my-applications/f-prot/ folder to the /usr/local/ folder with the middle mouse button, or you can type
ln -sf /root/my-applications/f-prot /usr/local/f-prot

F-prot is an antivirus program ... it scans your files for viruses

to use the XF-Prot gui (in the Utilities menu):

click the Update button to update the virus definitions

select the Path To Scan at the top
click the Scan button (at the bottom)

click the Report button to read the report after it has finished scanning

if it says anything about Infection: EICAR_Test_File, it's ok, it's harmless, it's just a test file to test whether your antivirus program is working or not

g2,

yes, i sym-linked /usr/local/f-prot & /root/my-applications/f-prot, but same problem. the gui front end isn't doing anything. for me it's no problem as i'm not particularly concerned with this puter, & like you say if need be can run f-prot on commandline, however for people that aren't commandline savvy, could be an issue.

so does it work in a type 1 install?

I will definitely be downloading this tonight because I think I still have something in Windows that I haven't been able to get rid of with AVG, Ad-Aware, or Spybot Search and Destroy.

Any suggestions on anti-spyware software for Linux? I know I don't have to deal with that issue much in Linux but I could use it to check Windows for Adware and Spyware.

I'm pretty sure its not a problem, but out of curiousity...I get couple of error messages:

Error on scanning /proc/4051/mem (access denied)
Error on scanning /proc/4051/mounts (access denied)

are these files "in use" so not scanable?

everything in Linux "is a file"
including hardware ... /dev
and the operating system parameters ... /proc

/proc/4051/mem would be how much memory that process is using ... that process may be f-prot itself, which might explain why it would be busy

a file in /proc is probably not a virus

see: Linux Filesystem Hierarchy

-----

there are lots of antivirus programs ... some are free, some are open source, some are not

Clam

AntiVir

McAfee

more ... avast, panda, bitdefender, kaspersky, etc etc etc

F-prot is available as an Unleashed/PupGet package (always has been, F-prot was available as a package long before pupget and dotpups existed)

i usually don't duplicate Unleashed packages ... the difference is, this dotpup is not the program F-prot ... this dotpup downloads and installs the latest version of F-prot directly from the server, and has an improved and working updater for the latest virus definitions

the updater program seems to be missing from the Unleashed package

there are other antivirus programs, but there is a gui interface (XF-prot) already in Puppy, and F-prot does not need extra libraries to run

Clam is open source ... it does need extra libraries that Puppy does not have

i have not tried most of the other programs

no antivirus program can find every virus ... antivirus programs usually miss some viruses that are there, and usually say some files are viruses when they are not (false positives) ... so it's good to run a few different antivirus programs (not at the same time, of course)

antivirus programs are probably most for your Windows partitions

i uploaded a new version

the updater now downloads virus definition files only if they have changed

if you already have F-prot installed, the dotpup will only install the upgrade, it will not download and install F-prot again, unless you want to
