Puppy Linux 3.02Alpha2_Chihuahua-firefox.iso now available

#1 Post by tronkel »

Try this one for size.

Get it here:

http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel

Out goes Seamonkey, Samba client, Abiword Plugins, Skipstone.

In comes Firefox Beta4 nightly "Minefield", Sylpheed 2.27 and MU's Kompozer. - 93MB, so still under the magic 100 MB.

No sense in having Abiword Plugins when this version does not have Abiword at all. Kompozer can stand in here as a document creator. HTML is a more ubiquitous format than DOC anyway!

Since file sharing is now taken care of by Kirk's excellent package, there seems little justification to leave the Samba client in.

I have changed the name to include "Chihuahua" to indicate that although it is based on the 3.02 barebones kernel 2.6.21.7 version, it should be considered as a base community version, that will eventually end up as 3.09CE or 3.10CE. Hence it can be slightly fatter than a what a normal barebones version might be regarded.

I have left it as an Alpha2 to indicate that it is a question of an altered package mix - rather than any under-the-hood changes.

I'll replace the Firefox Beta4 nightly with whatever newest Firefox version becomes available.

3.02Alpha-Access Denied

#2 Post by davec51 »

I'd like to try this Puppy, but the link leads me to an "access denied" screen. What do I have to do to join the club?

There seems to be a permissions problem on Eric's server, so that's why you can't get in to download the latest Chihuahua AFAIK

I've just emailed him about this, so keep trying until it gets fixed. - hopefully it shouldn't take long

Thanks, tronkel
I knew of the Firefox 3b3 not of the b4 though. I hope the b4 is a little more stable than b3 because I had to revert back to b2 to keep things running smooth.
Now it's just a matter of downloading Alpha2 on this dialup. :(
See ya in a few days!

Firefox

#7 Post by davec51 »

There is something here I think I don't get. I'm running 3.02Alpha from a CD now, and a handsome thing it is. However, the file has "Firefox" in its title, and the ad says Firefox, but all I find is Netsurf, a primitive browser at best.
Where is firefox?

davec51: I did not see Firefox in the Menu but I did find it at /usr/bin You can drag that to the desktop and set the icon to your preference. I did not look to see if there was a icon so you may have to look around for that.

Now for my little issue: I have created a .sfs file with xfce 4.4.1-opera 9.25 and sylpheed 2.4.8. I realize that sylpheed was part of this alpha but it was not in the previous which is what I was working with. My issue is that when I start xfce I loose most of the menu icons. everything else seems to be working ok. Has anyone else accomplished this? I done a search but did not find where anyone had tried xfce with 3.02.

Also I would like to say thanks to MU for the .sfs combiner....It is SWEET!!!!!

Is it Pnethood? I can't get my very simple wired network to work. I simply don't know what to do.

If you are talking about your internet connection:
1. Click Menu
2. Place mouse on Setup and then slide over to the Network Wizard and click it.
3. You should then see I'm guessing eth0. Click eth0.
4. You can click the test eth0 to insure that Puppy sees the network. If it does then,
5. You should be able to click Auto DHCP and get IP address.
6. Once you get IP addtress click Done.

To Navigate to the Firefox Symbolic Link:
1. Click the File Icon on the desktop. (HOME)
2. Click the up arrow in the upper left corner which will move up one level.
3. Click on the user folder.
4. Click on the bin folder.
5. It is in this folder that you will find the Firefox Symbolic link. Copy this link to the desktop for a shortcut.
6. Now you can change the icon of the shortcut to the icon of your prefernece by right clicking and selecting set icon.

Hope this helps.........

Gonna test it now. :)

Added info here but formatting required - anyone up for it?
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TalkingStickLassie

Personally favour Kompozer rather than Abiword (Abiword has never been stable for large docs - never) Anything up to 10- 20 pages (most uses - it is perfect)
We could use textmaker WP - very underated
Controversial - use of Cutting edge Firefox (No HTML editor as with Seamonkey) 8)

Very interesting :D

Yes firefox is there. /usr/bin/firefox.

Sorry about that. Forgot to include the .desktop file for the menu item! Will fix this for the next build which should be fairly soon now.

to change to Firefox (before upgrade) that Tronkel is working on

right click on browse (filebrowse / open as text)
change whatever it says for browser to firefox

Flash is not downloadable automatically (not included by default)
I like the default black backgrond

I would suggest adding the webpage as default
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TalkingStickWebpage

The two files - save as text and note where home directory and give the main html the same name

Is Pebble usable?

this exit routine from Lighthouse Pup?

My internet connection is fine. I just want to connect my Linux computer with an XP. The two have a wired connection that I have been able to use in other Puppies, either through LinNeighborhood or PNethood.

Here's the easy way to make Firefox the default browser on your desktop, for the people having a bit of trouble.
just install this pet package

Good work tuuxxx with the Firefox dotpet service pack.

I'll also sort that out directly in Unleashed for the next build of 302Alpha.
Might go back to a stable Firefox instead of a nightly? Whadaya think?

I agree 100% with the stable firefox 2.12 release is the best version, Better then the 3 beta for CSS rendering

Some people use Alpha build Puppys as if they are release versions

We should try and make things easy for them by providing a working browser - agree with reliability

Another example of undisciplined, ad hoc codenaming and the sometimes confusing managerie that it generates.

Lets see here ... should the new wiki page title remain "TalkingStickLassie" or be changed to:

1) TalkingStickLassieChihuahua,

2) TalkingStickChihuahuaLassie,

3) TalkingStickChihuahua, or

4) TalkingStickClusterFawk?
