Folks reading today's DWW will already be aware of SliTaz. French - of course (English subtitles!). 25Mb. If they can do it, with Firefox & co., why can't everybody else?!

The browser is actually "Bon Echo." I looked it up and that was apparently the name of the Firefox 2.x alpha.

It also uses JWM and lxpanel. The file manager is EmelFM. It could probably become quite usable with XOrg and ROX.

There are always detractors!! Some folks amaze me. Who cares which version of whatever - I was browsing at break-neck speed within minutes. It may be basic, but at 25Mb it's half the size of DSL and twice as good. And there's even an add-on package for those too greedy to appreciate that lowering the size pays the greatest benefits. It may even be small enough to re-write in assembler?!
Anyone wanting to create landfill, burn holes in pockets and play with the trade's latest gadgets can always revert to LongDistanceViewsOS and all the misery that entails.

I am very keen to try this. As you have, I wondered if you have tried the package manager and if it was easy to use?
Frankly it amazes me what has been achieved but I have not tried it.

I will try and be more positive . . . but I do care about adding other software - does that mean I have missed the point? So be it. Maybe someone else can help me in my futile attempts to find out this amazing question . . . otherwise I will just have to try it myself. I was also going to ask about wifi . . . but that might outrage you further . . .

This seems an excellent direction and I hope others will try it and offer feedback

looks interesting, setup network OK but no PPPoE. i must use puppy to see if it is in their extra files. or set up modem shares
in Teenpup 2008. then use slitaz with net work only.

Yes I read that but would find your impression more impartial
I do not go to MS for an opinion on Vista

When I first started using Linux (getting it running was the the first hurdle - I started with Slackware - took me 5 weeks to get it sort of working) installing packages was so involved I found it almost impossible. How things have improved for the desktop user. I looked at the software available a good range

You remarked about the days when you first found Linux,
when i first found it they wanted to know the name of the man
who made the ramdac and the lady who fitted it to the board,
so many things that the makers did not want to tell you, so i had to wait some time until i could leave it to Barry and the many helpers before i cold rid myself of that other fellows software, there you see i have forgotten his name all ready.
It is very difficult for those who put together a distribution to be all thing to all men. I have burnt a copy and will have look
when i have finished the metal work (model engineering ).

OK, Lob - I now have an answer for you. I had to wait for a spare moment, an old HD (2.1GB - yes, I know, overkill ^2, but there you go) and some time to become available .
Installation was easy, albeit one needs to use GPartED first, only ext3 and the instructions are in French, but the options in English.
Installing packages is not particularly easy if you don't read the manual first! [Guess what......****?????!!!!!!]
First read the long list online (what do expect in 25Mb - donner und blitzen?!).
Then you have to "recharge" access to the database in a root terminal with <tazpkg recharge> and <tazpkg get-install pkgname>
Not exactly difficult, but a little experience of Debian would help, as well as an ability to read......................................................................
All things considered this has to be a most attractive option???????????????

Much appreciated. I know you test out many different distros so I greatly
value your impression. I believe that when a Linux distro is better suited to someone's needs we should (and I believe we do) have the integrity to recommend something other than Puppy.

The two main reasons this might happen is very old
or otherwise limited hardware and also where a network orientated
distro is required. Do you agree? Do you feel their other situations where we might recommend other distros?

This one is exceptionally economical on resources whilst offering more than many with ten times its footprint.
Things would be so much easier if we could make sales of laptops illegal and stop the Yanks buying worthless tin boxes with over-promoted badges!

iptables is not installed by default.
There is a basic /etc/firewall.conf.

You did indeed Sage.

I am in Slitaz now and it is very similar to early Puppys
BUT because of various advances (kernel and software) it is a lot better
in many respects. We can I feel recommend this for machines with 16MB of Ram?

It autorecognized my network and connected Firefox ready to the net.
Does it work with wifi too I wonder?
It is also using Xorg (as an option) and feels very familiar. Many of the programs we know from Puppy are there. MtPaint, Geany, Osmo, FIrefox.
The UK keyboard works and the record facility seems to be doing something, so sound is working.

Do I prefer this to DSL (Damn Small Linux is twice the size)
I do. Do I prefer it to Austrumi? I do.

Do I prefer it to Puppy? Probably not but that requires time to answer and it deserves some . . .

Time to play with SliTaz. Tres Bon.
