Fotoxx: digital image editor

#1 Post by muggins »

http://kornelix.squarespace.com/fotoxx/
Fotoxx is a free open source Linux program for editing image files from a digital camera. The goal of fotoxx is to meet most image editing needs while remaining easy to use.

The following functions are currently provided:

* Image Navigator: show large image collections as a pageable screen of thumbnail images. Click on a thumbnail to view full-size or begin an edit session.
* Most edit functions described below can be carried out on the entire image or on an area outlined with the mouse, with smooth blending into the surrounding image.
* Adjust brightness / contrast to improve visibility of detail in both bright and dark areas (adjust brightness independently for brighter and darker image areas).
* Flatten brightness distribution - fast, easy method to improve balance and detail.
* Reduce fog or haze by reducing "whiteness" and intensifying colors.
* HDR - high dynamic range imaging: combine an underexposed and overexposed image of the same subject to improve details visible in both bright and dark areas.
* Panorama - stitch two or more images together to make wide images.
* Crop an image (choose area of interest and cut off surrounding margins).
* Rotate an image (level a tilted image, or rotate by 90 degrees).
* Scale an image (reduce or enlarge the pixel dimensions).
* Remove red-eye effect from electronic flash photos.
* Unbend an image with curved or warped perspective.
* Stretch or distort a selected image area to produce strange effects.
* Sharpen an image (reduce blur or fuzziness).
* Blur an image (soften sharp edges, blend out skin spots).
* The prior two functions can be done for the whole image or a selected area.
* Reduce noise in a photo made under low light conditions.
* Reduce color depth (bits per color) (posterize an image).
* Vary color intensity from no color (gray scale) to intensified color.

To run, Menu->Graphic->Fotoxx

Thank you for sharing this.
Have you used Xnview also?
If yes, could you make a brief positioning between the two?

Beem,

Being as graphically "challenged" as I am, I don't feel qualified to compare the apps. My primary purpose in uploading this app, and anything else, is to widen the pool of applications available for puppy users.

A bit confusing to download, but I managed to do it.

Biggest problem, the photos can't be displayed at their real size.
So smaller pictures are blurred.
Spoke a bit too early.
Was not very intuitive but I found that the mouse buttons had to be clicked several times.
But view/zoom isn't very easy.

The exif data isn't functioning.
I get a message that the exiv2 isn't found and that the exif is expired.

The tune feature isn't bad as it works on parts of the picture and not on the whole picture.

I have to look at the panorama feature.

I see no possibility to add text o exif data to the picture.

Animated gif's don't play.

So compared to Xnview fotox has that one interesting tune function.

And all of a sudden, fotox got kicked out of memory while browsing the pictures.

here is another one, extract to /usr/bin , then type:
pho -v
or
pho -h

Usage for example:
pho -p /usr/share/backgrounds/*

You can see, but not edit exif-data (hit "i")

Beem,

The attached .pet contains the exiv2 executable, and library, which fotox is looking for.

Following on from Beem's testing of fotox, above, I wasn't happy that if I ran it on the commandline, sometimes I was getting errors about fonts Thinking this was related to it's using acroread, as the default pdf-viewer, I've recompiled it to use gsview as the default. Now, at least, it doesn't generate these font errors.

If anyone downloaded this before, and is wondering why the size difference, it's because I initially included th fotox help .pdf file, which is over 1M.

Re: your fotox .pet

Hi Aragon,

I saw that you've just uploaded a new fotox version. I downloaded it to have a look. One minor thing is that the .desktop file doesn't have an icon set. Usually I just grab the fotox.png icon, rescale it to 32x32, and either copy, or symlink, this to /usr/share/pixmaps.

Also, I downloaded the fotox help .pdf, but fotox couldn't find it. I tried saving in /usr/local/share/fotox, /usr/share/fotox, /usr/share/docs/fotox, but all failed. Which directory should it be saved in?

The other thing I was curious about is the default pdf readers for fotox. The default viewer for older pups was gsview, but newer pupversions are using epdfview, but fotox source has it using evince, acroread, kpdf, xpdf & gpdf.

This is in the file zfuncs.cpp, down at line 2246. Since most pup users definitely don't use either evince, or gpdf, i usually change this section to read:

Code: Select all

const char     *PDFviewers[5] = {
                  "acroread -geometry 500x600", // alternative PDF file viewers
                  "epdfview", "gsview", "kpdf", "xpdf" };
Because with standard puppy, acroread & xpdf are only available as external installs, whereas including gsview & epdfview, should cover anyone that hasn't installed acroread or xpdf.

Anyway, I hope this is of some help,

cheers
muggins

As alpha 7 contains already the .36 version, I went to the kornelix site to find out what the .37 brings as improvement.
I didn't find something as release notes or the like.
Does someone know?

Beem,

from the changelog included with the sourcefile:
Fotox Change Log

2008.03.30 v.38
+ Spanish translation for GUI was added (thanks, Antonio).

2008.03.10 v.37
+ Tune area: reduce blend width to zero as pixel reaches image edge.

2008.02.20 v.36

When I tried Dingo alpha 7, I asked on the Dingo thread if it has a print function, as I couldn't find it. Hope you don't mind me asking here- does Fotox have a print function? If so, how do i access it?

Gerry,

I don't think fotox has any print functionality. Is this to print pics? Do you try using gqview, as wjaguar recommended?

@Gerry: There is no printing.

@Muggins:
- Help-File: I thought it has to be /usr/local/share/fotox but i will have a look at this later on and post it here.

- pdf: I noticed this too. I will have a look at it and if it's that easy to change, i will post a revised version later.

@Muggins

help file has to be in: /usr/local/share/doc/fotox/

icon in desktop-file: i'm using fluxbox in an 'frugal' way (no desktop, no icons). so i've simply forgotten this part.

pdf-support: which program will i have to use to change the code?

thanks

Gerry,

If you're after an image viewer that has printer functionality, from my little survey, your options are:

1) gimp...but not the version you downloaded that wasn't working.

2) mtpaint-v3.20...which can print via gqview or, with some tinkering, commandline parsing of the image to postscript.

3) gqview by itself

4) danpei does have a commandline printer script, but it needs installing convert from ImageMagick.

5) Iv has a printer option

6) Yoltia also has a printer option.

7) I've run out of other options...but watch this space...I see someone has forked gqview & has a sourceforge site for geeqie. I'm just downloading the alpha source to see how it's different from gqview.

Muggins- ttuuxxx's GIMP 2.4.5 pet prints nicely on Puppy 301 now that I've restored the machine-id file that had gone AWOL. No news about the GIMP 2.4.? that appears in the Dingo-a7 pet-get list.

GQview I know and like- prints beautifully in 214R.
