thanks Mark.

i found one reference (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 841#172841)
to the KDE358-update.pet file. i don't quite understand how it's supposed to be used (i'm a puppy newbie). i am under the impression that the KDE358-update.pet file might be obsolete, correct?

question, i thought .pet files were superseded by .sfs files?

oh yes, you need the .pet.
It includes fixes for the KDE358.sfs.
I did not apply them yet to the sfs itself, so this pet is needed, too.
After you selected the KDE358.sfs in the bootmanager (Puppy-Menu -> System -> Bootmanager) and rebooted to activate it, click in Rox-Filer on the downloaded pet to install it.

ah, i was wondering where i could find the muppy-mini 008.2 isos.

right.

my comment was meant to imply that i just realized that the base muppy iso was in fact the "mini" iso.

prior to that realization i was hunting around for a "mini" muppy iso.

The mini is:
Mini-Muppy-008.2-LANGUAGE.iso

Together with:
addons-LANGUAGE_082.sfs

you will get the same programs as using only:
Minisys-Linux-Standard-Muppy-008.2-LANGUAGE.iso

The advantage of using mini+addon is better memory management.
This will become even more evident in 008.3, where I could reduce the mini to be more responsive on computers with only 256 MB of Ram.

I will re-write the website this week, explaining it in detail, to avoid further confusion :D

i swear when i checked the puppyisos.org and puppyfiles.ca sites earlier today those mini files were not there.

why would the combo have better memory management than the standard iso? it seems unintuitive to me.

that sounds great.

thank you for all of your efforts.

if i start to setup clients with muppy, is there a way i can have them make a donation to you?

why would the combo have better memory management than the standard iso? it seems unintuitive to me.
Muppy basically consists of 4 files.
vmlinuz = Kernel
initrd.gz = Startsystem
zmsy_082.sfs = Kernel modules, extracted when needed
msy_082.sfs = the main system/applications

If msy_082.sfs is smaller than Ram (plus some slack), it can be loaded completely to Ram.
So the windowmanager, menufiles and most often used programs and libraries are extremely fast.
If the msy_082.sfs is larger than Ram (as in Muppy-Standard), it is mounted like a harddisk, and all files get loaded from that disk, when they are requested.
This is slower.

I currently have an old notebook with 256 MB.
msy_083.sfs (early testversion) was 168 MB.
The computer acted a bit "sluggish"-
I then started Muppy 007, where this file is only 88 MB. That is very very fast.

So I started to move stuff from msy_083.sfs to addons_083.sfs, until finally msy_083.sfs was 103 MB.
Now Muppy 008.3 is almost as fast as Muppy 007 on this machine :P
The files from addon_083.sfs of course will be a bit slower.
But for Gnumeric it is not so important, if it needs 2 or 4 seconds to start.
But a windowmanager-menu must be very responsive.

You may donate using the Donation-button at http://dotpups.de
Many thanks.
We use those donations to finance mirror-servers, and sometimes give amounts to other active Puppy users.

If you require more detailed help or customizations, we also may offer you support-contracts.
You may contact us then on http://minisys.org or by sending private messages.

i assume the SP3 patch mentioned in this thread:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23397

is specific to the 008.0 release and that the 008.2 release incorporates these changes?

Yes, correct. Do not install in 008.2, as that includes further changes.

Beem, you mean on http://minisys.org ?
It works for me?
Maybe it was temporary failure?

Yes, on the left hand side about in the middle, where there is that little animation.
I still have it.

Having a separate addon_xxx.sfs file is a great idea to speed old machines with low ram. I have a notebook with 256 MB as well and I'd like to revive it.

MU, when do you think the projected release date for mini_8.3 will be?

Cheers.

Beem, thanks, I found it now.
accessdenied wrote:MU, when do you think the projected release date for mini_8.3 will be?
I think it will take another 10 days or so.
The isos look ok so far, I just need to check out that I really also upgraded all english files.
Oh yes, just see that I must update the english initrd.gz to use ext3.
I will run more tests then, to be sure my modifications did not cause new errors.
We still work on embryo and server, I currently add Gtk.
008.3 will allow to remote control Muppy using a webbrowser, this needs some more fixes and tests, too.

And I need to update KDE.sfs and the website.
For this release, we want to release "all in one", not "part by part", to avoid the confusion and open questions that occured with the last release.

I plan to travel back to the north around april, 11th.
We then will look together if everythink works as expected, and if yes, release it.

MU, I have a question for you...
What is the location of the config file for icedock? I was fooling around with the other choices of dockapps under Muppy-Icedock and accidentally checked off 'icewmpoweroff'.
Now my pup-save file keeps powering off my machine as soon as the icedock launches at bootup.
If I know which config file to edit, I might be able to salvage my pup-save file or not...
Help :!: :!: :!:

Cheers.

/root/.Muppyicedock/.icedockrc

In the end, you have such lines:

Code: Select all

client=/root/.wmapps/volume.app
client=/root/.wmapps/wmfishtime
client=/root/.wmapps/wmix
client=/root/.wmapps/wmpower
client=/root/.wmapps/wmsm
client=/root/.wmapps/wmtop
Remove the wrong one :)

MU, thanks for the fix mate....

Other curious thought.
I have another machine with the same version of Muppy and I tried to manipulate these setting with a simple line deletion.
(For example, removing the 'client=/root/.wmapps/volume.app' line)
After saving the .icedockrc file, restarting .xinitrc, the line 'client=/root/.wmapps/volume.app' is back again in the same location in the .icedockrc file. How can this be?
Are the config for icedock hardcoded and can not be changed?
What is the purpose of 'Muppy-Icedock' dockapp setup if the changes are not permanent?

This is just something I accidentally stumbled upon....

Cheers. :D

oh, I just forgot to tell you, that you also must edit clients.rc in the same folder.
This is the settings file for my tool.
icedockrc then is the automatically generated file for icedock.

sorry.

Almost finished.
I already released a game-iso based on 0083:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28179

It is a bit like an inofficial release-candidate, I wait for Bugreports.
My colleague must go to hospital for some days this weekend, so it takes some more days.
We discussed it last night, and decided to definately release it within the next week after applying last fixes and updates (like firefox 2.0.0.14 and Opera 9.27).
We also set up the new server currently for more reliable downloads 8)

I'm offline from friday until tuesday.
Visit my mom (has no internet).
I downloaded some latest program releases, and will add them, and prepare the final isos while I'm offline.
On tuesday/wednesday we plan to add the current state of Minisys, and upload the Isos.

So if no unforseen things happen, on wednesday evening 0083 should be available.
