How to use Logitech Quickcam in Puppy?

Hi all puppies,

Could anyone help me with step by step instructions on how to get my Logitech Quickcam Web Camera working in Puppy.

I'm using the latest Puppy Dingo4 beta1, but probably the instructions would be applicable to previous versions of Puppy.

I have no idea where to start.

I think you're asking for trouble trying to do this on an early beta version, but this link is as good a place to start as any. It works for me in 3.01 with the Logitech Quickcam.

I'm now using pcPuppyOS btw which is 3.01 I think.

I followed your instructions and downloaded and installed the PWC....... file from your link. Then typed modprobe pwc
lsmod

that returned
pwc 96256 0

What do I do now? I don't understand any of this.

When I type xawtv from the command line, this is what I get.

Did you have your Quickcam plugged in when you ran MU's dotpup to install the necessary modules? If so, open Skype, open Main Menu and select Options>Video Devices. Your Logitech Quickcam should be shown as the available device. Click the Test button, but make sure you have sufficient light or the output will look pretty dark. Forget xawtv. You don't need it for what you are doing.

If you followed the instructions in that other thread, and installed everything properly, you can then add the following lines to the end of your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file using a text editor

depmod -a
modprobe videodev
modprobe gspca
modprobe pwc

This will get your Quickcam modprobed at each boot, so you won't have to manually do it again.

Use the mouse cursor to highlight the text. That automatically puts it on the clipboard - no copy, CTRL+C or anything else required. Then just right click in the edit window of the forum and choose paste.

Ok. Using v3.01 Retro 2.6.18.1 version of Puppy as it seems the most stable.

Followed your directions thus:-
Installed PWC-v4l2-2008.20.03-Pupp3-Kernel-2.6.21.7.pup from MU's.

As this version of Puppy does not have Skype installed by default, I searched the dotpups and found Skype-1.3.0.53.pup which I downloaded and installed. The installation did not add a menu entry, so I did not know whether it worked or not. But I opened a terminal and typed skype which opened up the program and allowed me to log in. Nut this version of Skype does not have provision for video and looks like a very old version. Other linux distros have a far later version included which look very much like the windows version and have video.

Anyway I logged in and did a voice test. The very first time, it worked both ways and I could clearly hear the test operator and my own voice played back. After that one time, the next and subsequent times, I can clearly hear the operator but my voice is broken and pulsating and this is where it stands now. I ran X server btw to see if a menu option for skype appeared but no luck.

In my audio settings I have 2 choices OSS with /dev/dsp and Alsa with sis si7012 as the in/out settings. Both give similar test results.

Could you offer any further guidance here as I'm so fed up with getting anything to work in linux that is not already included in the distros that I'm on the verge of smashing all my linux distros into a thousand pieces and fleeing back to windows.

I added a script to Muppywebcam, that can be run at startup.
It loads all modules.

So you can add it to .xinitrc or drag it on the autostart-folder (in Muppy).

What version do I download for Puppy.
