x problems on 1.0.5

#1 Post by Guest »

First, thanks for a great little OS.

Now the issue:
I installed Puppy 1.0.5 on a Packard Bell Multimedia C115 with 48 MB RAM, S3 Trio video card and generic monitor. I've done two clean installs, but each time after its installed I have sporatic X crashes. I can restore things fine with startx, but I thought I should report it.

In addition, there are times when I open the programs bar (the equiv of Start button in Windows) and the area that the menu appears in doesn't clear after I move onto something else.

Currently Puppy is on HDA4 (FreeDOS is HDA1, RH6 is HDA2, SWAP is HDA3).

I've been able to run other Linux's on the same machine (RH6, 7.2 and older Vector editions) without any x-problems. I also had 1.0.2 previously installed on the same machine and didn't have any such problems.

I also have 1.0.5 installed on a Dell Optiplex with 256 MB RAM and have not had any problems.

If 1.0.2 worked, it might not be the Xserver causing your troubles.
I would suggest to install Fvwm95 (Pupget) or icewm (Dotpup-Downloader) to check, if they crash, too.

Maybe it is just JWM that has Problems.
