Fire Hydrant 3.01 retro testers needed

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Hi Guys I need about 5-10 people to test my next release of Fire Hydrant 3.01 retro, it has tons of updates like cups, mtpaint, pfind, pburn, etc plus Lives, really the video recording software is what needs testing, If you send me email ttuuxxx(at)gmail.com (spelling and brackets is to stop spam) I'll post you a link, The iso is 238MB its the most advanced one I've made to date, Things like .chm,.cbrm,ppt and torrents all automatically open with the right applications, 3 weeks work on this release.
I'm just trying to keep the downloads down until its officially released to help out on Erics server, because once this release passes then the java version, then Open office Lite version, And finally a "Inferno" replacement.

P.S LIVES video editor takes a few seconds to load. so only click it once :)

The reason why I picked the retro version of 3.01 is because nobody using it, really the retro version is for older Pc's and yes sure my variant might have to be a full install, but with everything I've included you won't need anything else. I will try to keep puppy+Slackware alive, when Slackware 13 comes out I'll try to port it to puppy. I have found that Slackware is a very large useful tool for puppy, It brought tons of new applications and for what I've seen they've been pet an pup packages, you can tell by looking at www.linuxpackages.net and the very next day they are the same versions but as puppy packages in the forum. So basically it still keeps puppy as an individual in Linux Land. Well I guess I can only do this If Barry grants it and I have a handful of developers :)

Where to post?

Hi ttuuxxx,

I 'm using Fire Hydrant 301 retro right now. Where do you want to collect reactions from this pre-release testing? I've already visited your site to look for a thread.

mountains and molehills

O.K. ttuuxxx,

Here's the first biggy: I had a hang on shutdown due to a problem with pmount. I booted off CD with no flash drive plugged in, then mounted a drive to get at some mail. Later, when I went to unmount it, pmount told me I had removed the drive, after which it persisted in seeing the drive as a new device. This is probably because of the physical size of a tiny Sony microvault, which can move around in the connector. I had not written anything to the drive, only read files, yet there seemed no way to convince pmount to remount or unmount it. Fire Hydrant had no pup_save at all. Curious about what would happen if a newbie ran into this problem, I did a shutdown instead of solving the problem from the command line. The machine hung part way through drawing the console screen for saving and stopped responding. Not good at all. I haven't tested other exits from the X window system. I'll be looking for problems like those I've had with Chihuahua.

Minor problem with appearance: that root directory and file browser icon will make people used to other Linux systems think it is a root console. In Unix/Linux systems root is a badly overloaded word.

Personal preference: I have acquired the habit of exiting by going to the bottom of the main menu, where you have Settings. How about putting Shutdown/Exit there?

Haven't reached a verdict on the new desktop arrangement.

Overall, a good effort with more things than I normally use. Only thing I miss is Sylpheed for email, which I have the habit of using. Webmail doesn't allow me to spend time off-line reading, thinking and revising the way I like. Haven't tried Simplemail, yet.

I just retried it, I mounted and unmounted around 20 times without a problem maybe it was your usb stick moving around?

The pup_save file is built when you shut down, I clicked menu/shutdown/shutdown and it asked me if I wanted to make a pup_save. So I said yes, then it asked what size, and if I would like to save other files, then when it finished I had a message system halted.
So I pressed the reset button and reboot, It found the pup_save file and all the settings, keyboard, xorg, screen size.
So I don't see a problem at all with that, But on my newest pc which is less than 1yr old puppy 3.01 retro doesn't work it stops at the kernel, also this version has the same problem. Since its based on 3.01 retro. Maye the problem your having is 3.01 retro problem have you tried 3.01 retro puppy?http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/pup ... monkey.iso

I still haven't had any problems on my 2 other pc's with it.

Yes when it comes to mail maybe simple mail just won't do it, maybe I should add Sylpheed or Sunbird/Lightning.

I'll change the Icon name from root any ideas of a new name? I like to be different "Home Base"??

Quote " I have acquired the habit of exiting by going to the bottom of the main menu, where you have Settings. How about putting Shutdown/Exit there? "
ok now thats a problem, I couldn't find a way to change that. I wanted too. I can change every other title in the menu just the "Settings" title is hidden somewhere, I spent hours trying to find it, basically I wanted to add reset icewm to it and delete the shutdown menu and add my shutdown script. so you click shutdown and it opens my shutdown scrip like on the taskbar.
Maybe try it on another pc or remove your usb stick and see how it goes?

Thanks for everything you've done,
ttuuxxx

I placed all the icons into folders because the desktop was cluttered with them, It looked messy.

I was just wondering if you try the test 1 more time and see if you get the same results, but this time don't move the Sony microvault around, Because to me thats the same old Pmount problem always that puppy had.
if you mount a usb or any drive and the power is interrupted you get problems. But I don't think Its just this release I've had problems like that on other versions by pulling out a usb and shoving it back in without unmounting.
Thanks for your help and you've been the only feedback so far. :)

Also have you tried the midori browser yet and what do you think of it? Its about 50% smaller than Firefox. It was a real pain getting midori working, It had a lot dependencies plus the worst part it actually doesn't use its own icons it uses gtk icons and puppy doesn't use the full set so I had to first figure out the names and find suitable icons for a couple which were missing like "new tab" and "reopen recent closed pages."
Oh ya the problem with midori is that I couldn't figure out how to get flash or java working on it, No documents were available. Thats why I kept Firefox as default browser. But I guess that makes midori more secure if your not able to use flash or java.

I should of made a package up. Oh well it was real late when I finally got it going :)
