Can I use AC97 (soft)modem with 1.0.4?

I am clearly missing something.

1. At http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ there is no downloadable files called SLMODEMD_MostRecentVersion.tar.gz. There are two recent files beginning SLMODEMD but both refer explicitly to kernel 2.9. There appear to be no drivers for anything earlier than 2.6.

2. Puppy Linux v. 1.04 which is what I have and downloaded comparatively recently (within the last couple of months) announces itself in Xproc system information as kernel 2.4.

3. I want to run Puppy Linux on two computers. The older one, beside me, when booted with Linspire, tells me:
00:11.6 Communication controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. Intel 537 (AC97 Modem) (rev 80)
Subsystem: SILICON Laboratories: Unknown device 4c21
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5
I/O ports at e000 (size=256)
Capabilities: (d0) Power Management version 2

I have no idea what this stuff means, but are you saying that Puppy 1.04 can never work with this?
