I just installed Puppy 3.01 on my hd, full install. The line-in works ok, but I cannot get sound from my audio-cd with gxine and ` cdplay` in the console gives ` /dev/cdrom: No medium found`
In my other pc the light on the player starts burning after ` cdplay` , but also no sound. In both, the volume is high in the Volume Mixer.
How can I play my cd?

ok how I play cd's in 3.01 is
1st DO NOT MOUNT THE CD AT ALL
2nd next eject the cd and place you music cd in and close the door
3rd open Gxine and select File/CD in the menu and it should start to play straight away.
I have sound straight away. Other Pc's I have to run Menu/Setup/ALSA Setup Wizard.
Sometimes you have to try it a few times with different settings, if you hear a "Woof Woof" stop you have it,
Make sure your speakers are plugged into the output usually the green input on the soundcard.
hope this helps

The CD drive has a separate volume control from the "normal" audio. Run alsamixer from a terminal. You should see a meter labeled "CD". If not, push the right arrow key to scroll over until you find it. Then make sure that its volume is up around 90 or so. Also make sure that it isn't muted by checking if there is a '00' in the square that's between the meter itself and the numbers. If it shows 'MM' instead, press the [m] key to unmute it.

Yes, it works, I had to choose file-cd. Xine gave a window `warning from the xine engine: Unknown host unable to restore freedb. freedb. org`.
But after a while it stopped playing and I could not close xine, so I had to kill it. But then I could not open it anymore. I will try a new download and install.
I see the alsa volume settings are important.

I'm also a Puppy newbie, as of this morning...
Likewise, I found that when I try to play a CD in Gxine, it keeps stalling. Then it hit me: Don't play the disc - rip it to MP3s or OGGs (Ogg Vorbis audio files). You can do this using PCDripper. Puppy also comes with Pmetatagger, which will let you properly add title and artist tags to your files.
Obviously, I don't want to clutter my ThinkPad with a lot of OGGs. But it's nice to learn that there's an alternative way to listen to your music on your Puppy system.
