ATI 8.28.8 Display-drivers for old cards

#1 Post by MU »

These are the propriatary ATI display-drivers, version 8.28.8.
They are made for Radeon cards 7000 to 9250.
These cards are not supported by newer drivers from ATI.
But they are supported by the free Xorg-drivers of Puppy.

*************************************************

To use the free Xorg-drivers, you do NOT need this sfs.
For the free Xorg-drivers, just install Xorg-DRI and Xorg-OpenGL with petget!
And install this updated libGL.so.1.2, that fixes some issues:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 973#198973

*************************************************

The propriatary drivers are just needed, if you encounter problems with the free drivers.
For example Doom3 or Quake4 need them.
But they are also faster, and might fix some colour-problems in games.

Background-info:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29232

This is for Kernel 2.6.21.7!
If you have a different Kernel, you can try to compile your own module, a patched fglrx-source with readme.txt can be found in:
/usr/X11R71/kernel/source-patched/

It works in Muppy 008.3, Puppy 4.00, and should work in Puppy 3.01.
It does not replace your existing Xserver.
It just adds another one.

Download: (20 MB)
ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0083/go ... TI_083.sfs

Checksum:
ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0083/go ... fs-md5.txt

Download the SFS, and rename it from 083 to the version of your Puppy.
Then add it in the bootmanager (System-menu).
Be sure you run already in Xorg, not in Xvesa.
Then reboot, and exit X.
Now type:
install-ati

That activates the older Xorg 7.1 with the Ati-drivers.

If you want to revert back to Puppys newer Xorg 7.2:
exit X.
Type:
uninstall-ati

Issues:
Rxvt closes immedeatly the first time, you run it.
Afterwards, it runs ok.
Gtk-Fonts might look larger than usual.
If you miss a lib or program, try to symlink it from /usr/X11R7/xxx/ to /usr/X11R71/xxx/.

Fireglcontrol-panel wrongly tells you, that indirect Mesa-GL is used.
Type in a console "fglrxinfo" to get correct OpenGL-information.

I did not test them for a longer period.
In Puppy 2, Doom3 crashed after 10 minutes, when I played that 2 years ago.
So I played it in Puppy 1.
Maybe it works better with this new Xorg 7.1, please post your experiences!

The error-log is:
/usr/X11R71/var/log/Xorg.0.log

If you compile programs, run first "uninstall-71", or you cannot share your programs with others.

If you want to compile programs explicitly for 7.1, do it in 7.1, and type:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/X11R71/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/lib/pkgconfig
./configure --prefix=/usr/X11R71

More infos concerning that in the first link.
But there should be no reason to compile for 7.1, it is just intended as a "runtime" for special games.
The free xorgdrivers have more features meanwhile, like composite-support and such.

Ok, some experiences.

The driver runs fine with several Quake2-engines, and BlobAndConquer.

But it freezes Puppy after some minutes, playing quake2evolved in Wine 0.9.61.
This reminds me of the problems I had with Doom3 and Quake 4 in Puppy 2 two years ago.

The free Xorg-driver now can be updated with a newer libGL, that fixes several old errors, see:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 973#198973

So before you install this big SFS, I recommend to try the small libGL instead, first.
Just if that cannot fix your isues, try the SFS.

I updated the SFS.
I added one line to the installscripts.
Without it, on one system I had to reboot, so that the installation worked as intended.

I tested different versions of Quake with and without wine again.
The propriatary Ati-driver IS faster.
So you might use it not only, if the free driver fails, but also, if you want a faster gameplay.

And with the free driver the light on the walls reflected from shots with the standard weapon looks wrong.
The walls look very "coloured", what is irritating.
The propriatary Driver handles this correct.

I updated the SFS.
It now should work even if you never used Xorg before.
So you can use it, if xorgwizard freezes.
Also fixed the restart of the Xserver, it sometimes used a wrong path-setting.

I also renamed install-71 to install-ati.

MU, I sure could use some help here, please.

I have acer travelmate 8104 with fatfree puppy 301 and an ati X700 vid card.

First I tried to use your first suggestion and add the xorg-dri, xorg-opengl, and the updated libgl.so.1.2 file. Ran xorg and tried all the combinations (test, no test) and only BlkSOD.

Next I tried your .sfs file of prop drivers. Changed name to x11R71-ati_301.sfs, put it in /mount/home and used bootmanager to install it. Rebooted then, my interpretation of "exit x" was to ctrl+alt+backspace. At that prompt I entered install-ati. Forget exactly, but got to xorgwizard and tried to run xorg and it looked like it was working because I got past test now, or OK and to a screen that said something about if it looks ok, if not, you can use tweak. And I rremember a screen that showed the resolution and horiz and vert refreshrates, but there were no numbers in them???

When I got through it went to my desktop. Two desklets from the right side were now an inch or so in from the right side. I rebooted, now one of the desklets was missing. Re-installed it. Time to go to bed, shut computer down.

Brought computer up awhile ago and it said it did not start last time so I ran xorgwizard again. This time I got the results I had before I installed the .sfs file, BlkSOD. I had in /usr x11r71, and x11r72 which was symlink to x11r7.

Decided to get back fresh so swapped pup save file for the one I had backed up before the .sfs experiment, deleted the .sfs file and rebooted the computer. entered xwin restarticewm and was back to pre .sfs experiment. desklets where they should be and all correct, no x11r 71 or 72 directories. I thought I saved the xorg log file, but cannot find it on the flash drive now. It looked the same as the backup one, so I do not think it recorded anythig.

If you would be so kind, where does it look like I made a mistake or you see something that looks like it went wrong? What would you suggest we do now?

Thanks in advance, Chris.

sorry for the late reply, but I am not at home, and so do not have the Ati card here.
But I have a differnt computer now for tests.
First:
if you run "install-ati", then xorgwizard should not start.
Instead, X (7.1) should start immedeatly.
So something went wrong.

It might help to see your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Maybe your card is too new for this driver.
Did you try the newer ati-PET posted in this forum already?
Your card is named "X...", but I think this driver here was basically intended for "Radeon 7000" to "Radeon 9250".

I remember vaguely, that in german boards, the "X..." cards had very poor or no support with these old drivers.
So the newer one should be tried.

wait...
yes, at
http://ati.amd.com/
the newer driver is recommended for the X700.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply. One look around the forum and it is easy to see you are very busy and I just appreciate your taking the time for such a noob. Thanks.

Well, not sure exactly what I did, I tried several things.

I tried fglrx 7.11 and when I ran xorg, and selected test...BlkSOD.

Went back to xvesa and then tried fglrx 8.4. This time I skipped test and answered yes and it rebooted and the screen looks like it might actually be at the native resolution, 1680x1050, or something like that. Success?

In the console I typed fgl_glxgears and hit enter. I got back:
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
XLIB: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't gat an RGBA, double-buffered visual

Then typed fglrxinfo and got:
The xlib: ... from above, twice
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual!

What would I enter into the console to get it to tell me what the screen resolution is? Or, where would I look? xorg.conf showed the native resolution even when I know it was at the xvesa set resolution.

Here is xorg.conf

Sorry for such a long post, but I tried to attach the two files, but it did not work, so opted for copy and paste.

If you could look at them and see if they look alright, or suggest any other things I should do to get optimal performance from the driver/card combo, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris.

It looks like, you first used my Ati-Installer.
That activated my Xorg 7.1.
Then you installed the new Ati.pet.

It misses files, as Xorg 7.1 does not include everything, just the stuff required for the OLD driver.

I'd suggest, to run
uninstall-ati
or better, use a backup of your savefile, without my Ati-Xorg 7.1.

Then install the new Ati.pet again.
Now it should use Puppys /usr/X11R7/ (Xorg 7.2), and find all files it needs.

Mark, Thanks for the reply.

I hope I am not wearing you out.

I replaced the pup_save.2fs with one from another fatfree301 install.

I rebooted puppy and ran the ATI_fgrlx-7.1.1.pet

Rebooted again and checked to see if puppy pkg mgr showed the 7.1.1 pet install, it did. Checked dependencies, got appears to have all it needs message.

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to prompt.
1680x1050x24
typed xorgwizard. Chose xorg, 1680x1050x24, then OK. Did not select test, other poster said test would hang but OK was ok.

Screen went to the red text with message that starts if x did not work....

xorgwizard, xvesa booted to desktop. Made copies of xorg.conf and xorg.0.log. Please see below.

the xorg.conf was not created correctly.

Please exit X.
Now run xorgwizard, and choose xorg.
This creates a required symlink, if you ran xvesa before.
Then when xorgwizard finished, and you cannot start X, type:

Code: Select all

rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
aticonfig -f --initial
aticonfig should be installed by that ATI_fgrlx-7.1.1.pet, though I could not check it yet (have just an old card not supported by the new drivers).

aticonfig was at least in their old driver-pack, and my installer uses it.
So if you have luck, and it is also in the new pet, it will create a working xorg.conf for you.

Mark,

I d'loaded your file and placed in flash drive (using windoze machine).

Started puppy machine and went to /etc/x11 and renamed the current xorg.conf file to ...-bad.

Copied the file from flash drive into /etc/x11 and extracted to there.
I looked at the file and it looked to me to be like the ones we have used before.

Did Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit x and get to prompt.

I entered aticonfig -f --initial as instructed.
I entered xwin as instructed.
X did not start, got the red verbage about if x did not start....
Typed xorgwizard and selected xorg, yes, still got red verbage.
Typed xorgwizard and selected xvesa.

Went to /etc/x11 and found two xorg.conf files.
Removed them both to my documents and extracted your file again.
This time I opened a console and entered aticonfig -f --initial.
Got the message as before about incomplete xorg.conf file.
Typed xwin anyway and I believe i got to red verbage again.
Typed xorgwizard and then xvesa.
Went to /var/log and copied the xorg.0.log file and am copying it below.

A couple of questions if I may.

Is the incomplete xorg.conf file because aticonfig and/or puppy cannot "see" my chip and lcd screen?

Laptop vendors, including this Acer, do special things to the video/screen in windoze so that ati catalyst drivers do not work and you are stuck with the acer driver. Do these mods carry over to puppy linux or is it a whole new ballgame in puppy?

Did you see the post by cthisbear in the following?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 64d#202861
I could not find entries in my xorg.conf file like he referred to. I think he may not be using a puppy.

Thanks for your patience and help, Chris.

I'm a bit confused, it should generate the required entries.
Looked again at your first message, there everything was fine, except that the glx module could not be loaded.

I now would try to install a current ATI-Driver on my own.
You will need devx_301.sfs, and maybe Kernelsources.
This files provides both:
ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0083/DE ... nt_083.sfs

ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0083/DE ... md5sum.txt

In Puppy 310, you must rename it to:
development_301.sfs

Then add it in the bootmanager.
Then download
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/ ... x86_64.run

Then run in a console (in the same folder):
To go to the same folder, type something like:
cd /mnt/hda1/my-downloads/ATI-stuff
To run the installer:
bash ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run

You might have to reboot then, or exit X and type:
rmmod radeon
rmmod drm
xwin

It might do things required for your card, that the packages we created, have overseen.
I'm away from saturday morning until tuesday morning, so maybe cannot reply quickly.
Good luck!
Mark

Mark,

I really appreciate all your help and patience.

I followed your latest and it did not work either. In fact, when I got BlkSOD, and did hard restart, it never asked about failed to start and give me command so I could enter xorgwizard and then select xvesa.

It just kept rebooting to failed xorg with BlkSOD.

I decided to try puppy4 Dingo and did frugal install to another partition. When i tried xorg, I thought it was going to give me the BlkSOD, but then I saw an x in the center of the screen and then the desktop.

Now I have to figure out how to make wireless work, it did not work in my fatfree puppy301 either. Atleast out of the box.

I really liked gDesklets, too bad they are shown as being for puppy-3 only. I wonder why?

Anyway, thanks again for everything and I hope your trip is successful, Chris.
