DOWNLOAD HAS BEEN UPDATED

The rdesktop and MD5 issues have been resolved and I have even crammed in 4 Mozilla plug-ins I like ;-)

It now takes up EXACTLY a mini-cd

Hi,

The release of the Mantis web-site has been delayed until I get back from
holliday (I leave tomorrow morning), as I want to monitor the load on the
site closely when the system comes on-line ...

I would be more than happy to put the Mantis setup on Barry's new host, in
which case I'd be less concerned about the load and bandwidth ;-)

Anyway, in the mean time I have made a much-needed update to my 50Mb Puppy
build and tried a few new things ...

Here you have the BETA anouncement :

New features :

New compression and a couple of other system tweaks.
Mozilla now comes with a new theme and menu system that makes it look good.
Re-Arranged the desktop, changed some icons, resized others.
New RXVT theme for the desktop.
I have included the SP1 fixes.
Torsmo added and always on the desktop.
Boots on 128Mb (unlike PizzaPup - why?).
Grisbi replaces xfinans.
Perl so that NDisWrapper works out of the box.
Vi replaced with Vim.
TightVNC replaces TkVNC (which just doesn't work propperly)
galculator (My favourite calculator program)
Wallpaper and theme that I liked (from the forum)
New boot spash and menu

Removed : (compared to the official 1.0.5 build)

"fig2dev/figurine" as I cannot see a use for it.
bubbles, gemgame, gtkfish as I only really play Minesweeper.
"pstoedit/PuppyPDF", because I needed the space.
quisp-126 because I have never used it.
ycalc (how many calculators do you need?)
bluefish (because I never liked it)

rdesktop ... I accidentally removed this, I have to remaster later and add it.
Md5 file is incorrect, I forgot to make it so I will when I upload the new ISO later.
Will the removal of "pstoedit" affect anything else ?
NOTE : The ISO is 51.7 Mb ... My 50Mb CDR's actually hold 52Mb, that is why ;-)

This is very good news!

I haven't jumped on the remastering bandwagon, but you actually included/excluded a matching set from my wish list.

I think that the tradeoff between what you added and removed is quite balanced. I think that the people that require wireless networking outnumbers the people that will be writing a dynamic personal webserver using quisp.

I like the darker backgrounds for the splash and desktop as they make the flicker is less noticeable at low refresh rates.

I have no problem using Big puppys. I like Chubby for everyday use and showcasing. But I think that your remaster really follows the puppy mission statements of 'just works', 'Has what you need', ' Boots in low ram' etc.

I have a Puppy presentation at my local Linux Users group the following week and I'm sure your remaster will be part of the presentation.

Mut (mounts your drives) has been upgraded to 1.0.6 and the Mozilla theme is great (I always have to change it immediately to "Pinball" but your choice is very good and doubtless smaller) The theme change also looks good on composer.

The first time I tried "Mean Puppy", I just used the default - which meant it booted up with my default puppy001 settings and seemed to do this OK . . .

The second time I choose option 4 which allowed me to boot up without effecting the HD and that is what I am using now.

This is very polished John, it feels like Puppy 1.0.5 Special Edition. The only thing one can say is, "Lean and Mean" - Hooray!

Business Card Puppy

Great package, complete with gray printable cover, simply irresistible.

This will make Puppy at par with DSL (not that it compares, really) with regard to availability in business-card CDs.

I think I saw there Murga's Puppy :) (Just thinking of a name other than Mean.)

Adding Java support to this Puppy will make it a Banker's Puppy (which will require higher hardware specs, I guess). I remember Peter awaiting a polished version of that package anxiously...

Are you asking why yours needs 128 or why mine doesn't, or that mine can't and you don't know why?

In the first case, it would be because mine has usr_cram.fs separate from image.gz. I'm assuming yours doesn't.

I like that bootsplash. The old blue one was nice too. Good job :)

I just tweaked the bootspash ;-)

Ummm, I thought yours should work with 128MB, having the usr_cram.fs outside should allow you to boot with less ...

Anyway, download has been updated - please grab new version

Linky - Does cool things with links
Web Developer Toolbar - Adds many "way cool" options.
Copy as plaintext (I use it a lot).
Status bar clock.

And somehow the ISO ended up the perfect size ...

My one complaint is that I was going to add memcheck, but once I added the plugins the image didn't have any room left ...

Thanks for putting together this ISO. Only winXP was able to work (poorly due to little memory & slow HD).

Lean and mean is good.
It would be nice to have 64Mb as the standard, as it is easier to find 68pin strips that add up to this on really old kit.
The puppy image has always been a concern, although one can empathise with BarryK's little tail (sic). Perhaps these remasters might gestate into entire new distros and carry a more butch tagline like Rotweiler?!

Unintentional Speed-up?

I don't know whether this new version is as speedy, but the old one (with the large image.gz) was simply speed-fantastic! I used it in my 400 Mhz Celeron with 196 MB RAM and the speed was awesome.

Will have to test the new version later. You might ask, "what about the standard?" Am using it now and still feels the speed of John's "erroneous build" was a lot more :)
