Can anybody help me how to set up a direct FireWire cable connection between two computers running Puppy (3.01 or Dingo or Muppy, liveCD, anything OK.) or one running Puppy and the another running Windows XP? I have to transfer dozens of gigabytes of data, and the internal network here is terribly slow.
Thank you,
fzsolt
FireWire direct cable connection
Hi
I would issue all known 1394 commands, in a console
modprobe ieee1394
modprobe ohci1394
modprobe eth1394
modprobe raw1394
modprobe dv1394
Maybe not all are needed.
This should enable you to use either firewire400 [I'm not certain about 800] or ethernet over firewire
Use network wizard & see if you have a new network
If you mount your h/d using mut or pmount you should see your files in rox
To talk to a win box you will probably need to just try firewire/explore,
or network neighbourhood in win, or maybe have a look at samba in Puppy menu
This search tool will get you most info on the forum

Also usb to usb is possible

no success
Thank you for the reply. Later I found the post from Béèm at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17510 , too.
Unfortunately no success. I opened rxvt, issued all the modprobe commands. Nothing happened. And I could not see any new ethernet device in Network Wizard or with ifconfig. Did I make anything in the wrong way?
I tried this on two machines, with Dingo, Muppy 083d, even with 2.16 (Béèm used it in his original post). Windows XP device manager displays these firewire adapters with no problem, as standard OHCI compliant devices, and I am able to assign IP address to them, so probably they are OK.
Is it necessary to plug in the firewire cable before booting or before the modprobe commands?
