A simple remaster of Puppy Dingo to make it look attractive
Only the appearance of Puppy Dingo has been changed. Features and functionality should be the same.

The boot up sequence has a very pleasant two selection scrollable menu for boot options. How much resources are required to run that? Very nice!
The layout uses an intuitive mac style icon bar and a plain desktop. MacPup seems similar to 'SimplePup' one of my fav puplets - which used XFCE. Macpup uses the very efficient and reliable IceWM.
It seems very familiar with all the Dingo programs.

I am glad Gizmo worked for me. I think it was a new laptop where the audio drivers were not enabled well by Puppy. I got onto my older laptop where Puppy works well. And in 2.17.1 got voice working. Horray!!

Can't Eject CD
I love the look and feel of Macpup, but after I made a separate 2fs file and copied the sfs file to my hard drive root, the CD stays mounted on reboot and I can't eject it. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. I have used several other versions of Puppy without encountering this problem. Please help.

Can't Eject CD
When I use PMount I see that both the hard drive and the cd drive are mounted. The "UMNT" button is greyed out for both drives.
I'm guessing that the boot didn't see the appropriate sfs file on the hard drive. I'm going to try deleting both sfs and 2fs files from the hd and trying again. I'll tell you how it goes.

CD Won't Eject
I took out (renamed, actually) both the sfs and 2fs files on my hard drive and booted with pfix=ram. The CD drive was still mounted and couldn't be unmounted by using PMount. So the CD drive was not usable for other purposes, as in other versions of Puppy.
I think I know the problem: I have only 192mb RAM. Could Macpup Dingo need more, so it doesn't copy entirely to my RAM? That would also explain why other versions, that maybe require less than 192mb, do go entirely into RAM and free the CD drive.
If so, this problem doesn't take away from your achievement of an elegant, beautiful OS.

Thank you for verifying. I did read somewhere that Dingo might use more memory when compared to its predecessors even thought its size is smaller. I cannot validate it though.
Maybe I will try running it on mine and see the memory usage. Have to wait till I get home to get on my Macpup laptop.

I think you were right. I booted from a Macpup Dingo (pfix=ram) and did a FREE command in the console after bootup. It showed more than 200 MB of RAM being used.

Macpup is brilliant!!!!!
I love the look of it as do the kids who have demanded we change from standard Dingo to Macpup.
I am ssuming that there is no way to re-use my pup_save file from my standrd dingo install? I tried booting Macpup with it and, aside from a few different icons it appeared as standard dingo.
So I guess I'll gradually install the various pets, java etc and my files from my standard dingo but I'd like confirmation that this is the best way to do it.

On the subject of memory usage, I did some comparisons here with one of the dingo alphas and some earlier versions:

When using output from busybox free you should remember that it includes the cache and buffers. Whilst some will say that you should subtract cache and buffers in frugal usage this is where the pup_400.sfs is held and cannot simply be ignored. My charts show that when the squash file is loaded into ram dingo uses less ram than 3.01 but more than 2.13. Looking at the 3 curves at the bottom shows that if the squash file isn't loaded into ram (or you have a full install) the memory requirements are fairly close.
I think the cut-off for dingo to load into ram is approx 224-230 MB.

I tried macpup last night, very nice. My first experience with Wbar. I'm sure this has been covered somewhere already.. but .. is there an easy way to configure wbar . I read on one website about a python tool you could download and run .. I also looked in the suggested location for the data to enter manually but it seemed to bare no resemblance to what was shown in wbar ...
As for running it on a low memory machine .. I tried it on a 192mb machine with no problems. this may not help davec51, but I downloaded the ISO and copied the files into a /macpuppy directory off root then just added a grub entry to run it .. (which means I've missed out of the pretty boot options). I guess davec51 is still booting off the CD and just speeding things up with the files on HD ??
I'm afraid this is all very new to me .. so thanks for "free" .. todays command to play with ! Just tried it on my 192mb machine running muppy 8.3e - I have 3.5mb free with nothing running .. uhmmm and on my 320mb machine I have 4.5mb free with firefox running and about 10 tabs open .. though neither show swap as being used..
Slightly off subject, n both machines I now have several versions of lunux/puppys - all show the trash as Empty . yet looking in .local or using the graphical disk usage tool - I see lots in trash ! If I go in to delete the files manually from trash off the drive, will they go from trash straight back into trash ? or a special command to clear it out "pooper scooper ?" A forced delete of files generally - shift+del doesn't seem to work, is there an equivalent.

Yes I did see that error message. I have posted on the Hotpup thread requesting help. I am not sure myself. It looks like Hotpup settings script is not able to modify the .xinitrc.
