Puppy 4.0 Manual available

#1 Post by oli »

The Puppy 4.0 manual is available at http://www.puppylinux.org/manual in English and German language (there are still some minor updates necessary, that I will do next days). The Italian and Spanish manual will be published soon.

(I search for a maintainer of the English manual. Please have a look at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=30260 )

For 4.0 backups the manual states:

"How to backup pup_save.2fs

The file pup_save.2fs contains the personal settings and your personal files, if the files are not stored on another partition (e.g. harddrive, USB stick). The backup is very simple. Either you start Puppy with the boot-option "puppy pfix=ram" or you start your old operating system (Windows). Then you copy the file onto the backup medium (e.g. another harddrive, USB stick, CD-ROM)."

On my frugal install, the pup_save file is available for copying in /mnt/home/puppy400. Why do I need to pfix=boot?

It is generally consider safer not to be using a pup_save file when you back it up. This avoids the risk of creating an inconsistent backup because processes are saving data to it at the same time that you are creating a copy.

I just ran an md5sum, and sure enough...copying while it's loaded creates a corrupted file. I guess it really does pay to read the manual :)

This makes sense, when I thought about it. Unloaded, it's just a compressed file. Loaded, it's like a mounted directory (not just a file?)

EDIT: just copying the md5sum to file produces a difference (when mounted):

md5sum /mnt/home/puppy400/pup_save.2fs
md5sum /mnt/home/puppy400/pup_save.2fs > /tmp/pup_save.2fs.md5.txt

:D Hello

@ I have noticed the following section on mounting the pupsave (or any SFS) to access it.

" Start Puppy with the boot-option "puppy pfix=ram".

Then you open a shell and enter the following command:

mount -o loop /mnt/hdax/pup_save.2fs /mnt/data."

Seems a little complicated for the new user, and outdated anyhow.
With 4.00 Puppy series, you can just click on an SFS file to mount/unmount it, right?? Did I miss something?? I just want to include the easiest answer in my instructions first, for end-user ease of use.

Am going to do the 301 WLAN page tonight, and while I`m there, when the manual refers to Router, does that mean a residential gateway, ex. Ethernet, if so I will complete those pages as well..

@ Also,I was thinking about a FAQ page, linking to answers on the forum, to common questions. Good idea or no???

@ Sweet idea putting the Google Translator box right on the page!!
. ................ :D :D :D Brilliant :D :D :D ....................
It will help with keeping things consistant..

I looked at the section on "how to install official programs" for 4.0, and the instructions are for another (older?) package manager. Also, I wouldn't recommend step 1: first run Roaring Penquin. I tried this (just to see what it was) and had to restore my backup pup_save after it blocked my eth0 connection. I couldn't figure out any other way to get rid of it.

:D Good example!
Although this Page is applicable to 3.01, (Except the RoaringPenguin part)Dingo has upgraded!!
How about "After you have connected to the internet, Click the
"Install" icon on your desktop" at the top instead?
Followed by Images from Dingo`s updated PETget Package Manager system, replacing the outdated ones. (BTW, nice update, real slick!)
Thanks for bringing this up, any more outdated stuff you spot, post it or PM me, I`m making a list.( And checking it twice :D ) I need all the end-user input I can get, especially from the new users!! :D
Perhaps I can get to this one tonight too... 8)
@ OK, updated the pages about installing and uninstalling Pets in the 4.00 English Manual....Comments.??...Suggestions???
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world

Puppy 4.0 Manual available

#9 Post by Scoticus »

Looking to change the clock settings to 24 hour the instruction in the current manual appear to be copied from an earlier version without checking.

The screen shots do not look the same as that displayed when selecting Filesystem>Rox Filter File Manager and things keep going downhill from there.

For neither love or money can I access the code to change the settings.

Could this please be looked at?
