:D
Whilst we are transferring please be aware:

Here are registered users pages
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/HighScores

If you are a registered user think about the ACL status of your page
Do not know what that is? - check out the bottom of your page
most pages can be set to * in the third box
that means even unregistered users can edit your page - we had no problem with this approach - on 3 occasions that I know of, we changed from * to + (slight security increase) after deleting wiki spam
At the moment most pages are temp owned by Barry and set to + security - which means they can only be edited by registered users . . .

If you have pages that have comments on the old wiki - check out the comments in case there is any info you wish to bring to the new wikki site

Makes sure links on the new wiki are working and pointing to the new wikki

Anyone of our Puppys is welcome (it is a wiki) to register and edit most pages - eventually you should as before be able to edit without registering . . .

If your page is complex or contains html it may not be editable by beginners
Do you encourage them to leave a comment? Do you wish to share editing or are you happy with being the sole maintainer?

Is your page friendly for example putting this on the top of your page

Code: Select all

{{image url="http://tinypic.com/5vsysl" }}
will give a tiny friendly pup image
- or do you prefer the speed of plain text

Barry has also suggested bringing in info from his website (should be on line soon . . .) to the wiki which would mean the info could be updated more often and the responsibility shared.

Many thanks for everyones efforts

It would be great if more people can help editing these pages:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/video
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/sound
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/network
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/input
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/others

Ian has started editing the network page already. It will be great to see others editing them too :)
Btw, you can change the acls to public for others to take up the ownership ;) (I have thought of doing that in the old wiki but am too lazy, as I may need to edit the ownership info on the sitemap page as well :))

When editing the page there will be lines like:
<!---------------- Enter your X-SERVER tips after this line ------------------->
<!------------------------ Your tips should end here ------------------------->

So it should be easy :D

OK gonna start changing the ACL on some of the pages Puppian suggests :)

This is what someone who wishes to edit the page on "video" is presented with . . . :shock:

Code: Select all

""<html> <head> <title>Puppy Linux</title>    <meta name="Author" content="Puppian">    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html"> </head> <body bgcolor=white>  <center> <table width=98% border=0 cellspacing=3 cellpadding=7 bgcolor="#FFFFCC"> <tr align=top>  <td align=right width=99%> <h1> <FONT face="Times New Roman"><i><b>Puppy Linux Mini How-to &nbsp;</b></i></font> </h1> </td>  </tr> </table> </center>  <table width=100% border=0 cellspacing=10 cellpadding=0> <tr align=top>  <td align=left valign=top bgcolor="#c8e3ff" width=20%>  <table cellspacing=0 border=0>  <tr> <td> <b>Basics</b> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="PuppianL">About</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font  face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="install">Installation</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="start">Getting Started</a> </font> </td> </tr>   <tr> <td> <b>Software</b> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font  face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="wm">WM</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="rox">Rox Filer</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="pget">PupGet</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="dpup">Dotpup</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <b>Hardware</b> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font  face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a href="video">Video</a> </font> </td> </tr>  <tr> <td> <font face="Verdana"> &nbsp; - <a
Now I know HTML but this is not very welcoming . . . :?
A wiki is HTML but simplified
HOWEVER I like Puppinas pages a lot but I doubt if they will be edited - I hope I am proved wrong. Most of the existing pages are edited by two maybe three people at most. Very few pages are a team effort BUT the wiki is for all - it has to be easy

OK back to turning pages over to non-registed editing.

Thanks guys :) keep that wiki data flowing in . . .

I notice that a lot of people have registered and are helping with upgrading the wiki with links.
Many thanks to all
The more the merrier I say . ..
:lol:

Do we need the old news pages going back to March from the old wiki - I was not gonna bother but someone might want them? I must admit they were done brilliantly :oops: (Oh OK I did them - must remember to be modest)

Remember to put relevant news items on the "NEWS" page - that should be open access without registering as far as I remember?

Actually with my new admin powers maybe I can have ago at deleting a page or two - any preferences for a page that just must go? :twisted:

This is what someone who wishes to edit the page on "video" is presented with . . . :shock:
They are put this way (linebreaks, empty lines and spacing deleted) so that when editing the page one don't need to scrolldown a lot before he can edit the content. The top part of the code is mainly for generating the top bar and left navigation pane, which don't need to be changed often (and people who aren't familar with html don't need to touch that, and thus won't risk mess that up).

After pressing PageDown this is what people will see:

Code: Select all

<TABLE border="0" width=100%>
<TR>
<TD bgcolor="#F13042">
<FONT face="System" color="#ffffff" size="3">   What is Xvesa and Xf86</FONT>
</TD>
</TR>
</TABLE>

<table style="text-align: left; width: 100%;" border="0"
cellpadding="10" cellspacing="3">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td align="undefined" valign="undefined">
<!---------------- Enter your X-SERVER tips after this line ------------------->

Please feel free to add your how-to here, e.g., how to setup the hardware so that it'll work in puppy, trouble-shooting, faq, useful links, etc.<br> If you don't know html, you can just input the text here and someone (me or others who know html) shall format it for you. Keep tips short and clear so that newbies can understand you easily ... I know nothing about hardware, you can teach me by writing here :D<br><br>

By the way,
<ul>

<li>it's easy to make a list
<li>like what you see here
<li>to edit this page just double-click on it, or click 'Edit Page' (see end of this page)
<li>and <a href="http://216.147.98.109/support_htmlbasics.html">here</a> is a short html tutorial.

</ul>

<!------------------------ Your tips should end here ------------------------->
</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>
So again, please enter the tips between these two lines:
<!---------------- Enter your X-SERVER tips after this line ------------------->
<!------------------------ Your tips should end here ------------------------->

The only must-know tag to edit those pages is <br>, which starts your sentence in a new line ;)

How is "" implemented?

#7 Post by raffy »

Puppian is very prolific in using HTML, but i guess there is a way for shifting to/from HTML in every page, using double quotes ("").

So if you terminate HTML coding with "", that means other users can then insert Wiki text, something like:

<!-- Hi, this is Puppian, I have laid this page out in HTML, but you can add familiar Wiki formatting in the areas I designated below, just look for the mark WikiTextWikiTextWikiTextWikiTextWikiText -->

SOME HTML
<!-- WikiTextWikiTextWikiTextWikiText - Add Wiki text below -->
""

Wiki text added here...

""
<!-- Adding Wiki text ends here -->
<!-- HTML HTML HTML HTML HTML text follows -->
More HTML

I have not tried this yet, but I guess it should work :oops:

It might be better to do it like this:

Code: Select all

<!-- WikiTextWikiTextWikiTextWikiText - Add Wiki text below --> ""

Wiki text added here...

"" <!-- Adding Wiki text ends here -->
So they don't accidently mess with the quotes. Otherwise they might put something before or after them, or even remove them.

I had thought of that too but no, it won't work, it will break the table. E.g,

It's something similar to this now:
""<table>
<tr>
<td>LEFT NAVIGATION PANE</td>
<td>CONTENT</td>
</tr>
</table>""

But layout will be broken if it becomes
""<table>
<tr>
<td>LEFT NAVIGATION PANE</td>
<td>""

CONTENT (wiki text)

""</td>
</tr>
</table>""

As the table is 'cut into half' :)

Btw you'll probably find these links interesting:
http://wikka.jsnx.com/TableAction
http://wikka.jsnx.com/TableofcontentsAction
http://wikka.jsnx.com/TableActionInfo
http://wikka.jsnx.com/AnchorAction

Some of the Wikka people already notice the need for better table, anchor, etc, but seems not much has really been done yet...
Fyi an action is just like the 'embeded php scripts' that Pizzasgood mentioned in another thread.
http://wikka.jsnx.com/UsingActions

To use the user contributed actions (like the Anhor action in one of the link above), one need to install it first. That usually means copying the code to a file called, say anchor.php, and put it at the wikka/actions directory; then when editing the wiki page, just put {{anchor}} to use the action. I've used the user-contributed action here to build my weather pages.

More user-contributed actions can be found here:
