4.1 Alpha 4
OK Barry is welcoming tests for this version
PSIP - a softphone is included and this will allow easier communication
I am downloading the version with undev not included
but I already tested this with 4.1 Alpha 3 and adding it to skiplist
made no difference . . .
Anyway hope it works - I may change my PC to use it
- a bit drastic (have to used change a shared power supply)
- or may try it on an old laptop running without a HD . . .

"reboot" froze: 2 partitions mounted
"reboot" froze: 2 partitions mounted
Gateway 2000, 64 MB, Linux swap
Puppy 404-CD: pfix=ram
Mounted 2 HD partitions.
Later, selected Shutdown > "reboot"
Everything froze.
Mouse cursor wouldn't move,
CTRL-ALT-BKSP ineffectual,
Time/Clock stood still.
I did a power off/on frugal boot ok.

my experiance
epia-v motherboard cf card in cf to ide adapter
booted from usb stick, the standard 404
first boot did not detect the cf card pmount not working at all
made a save file to the usb stick
second boot only X on the screen nothing else
403 was much better for me

Fourth attempt to d/l succeeded, ~1hr.
Works more or less the same as previous versions on my bog std. kit. Certainly does not boot any quicker in pfix=ram mode with swap available - probably slower; Seamucker is definitely slower as well as those intrusive, unwanted exhortations to select a function now interfere, too.
Whatever happened to MUT2?

great server!
Testing my usual AMD 2+ Ghz machine with 128 MB RAM and SiS chipset.
Edit: Am using the ISO with evdev.
I was admiring fast CGI in the Hiawatha conf file when the PC hung! These were what I did before that:
- fired and appreciated Zigbert's PBurn, also the Xsoldier game;
- tested eth0 and then RT73 USB adapter - both work out of the box;
- started Hiawatha and PPLOG (what's the password???);
- browsed PPLOG and edited index.htm in Hiawatha's root - server seems unaffected;
- I was looking at the server httpd.conf file when the PC hung.
The keyboard kept flashing, and CRTL-ALT-DEL did nothing. However, pressing the button shut the PC down.
Now am typing in Alpha4 in my Celeron 850 + SiS chipset at home. Only the browser was opened. So far OK, will keep this running for three hours. No problem so far.

Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only).
Here is an alternate download location:
http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/test/puppy-4.1alpha4/
I tested this on my 4 year old Laptop:
- Booted faster than the earlier versions
- Network was setup without problems. But still feel a little slower on the connection. (rt2500 module - wlan)
I did not test much. Will post back later.

Seamonkey 1.11 instability
I'm booting 404 from CD with a pup_save on flash.
As compiled, Seamonkey 1.11 appears quite unstable. I experienced one outright crash and three hangs of various extents in the first two hours of testing. The crash did not affect X but SM would not restart. The three hangs partially or completely disabled X - no keyboard and/or mouse response.
Please advise as to how I can capture log/debug.

UnionFS crashes continue
I am booting 404 from CD with a pup_save on flash.
I experienced a UnionFS crash (at shutdown) after just four reboots. Output appears similar to that of 400. No way to capture it save a digital snap of the screen.

Initial Xfprot connection attempt failing
I am booting 404 from CD with a pup_save on flash.
Xfprot initiates connection with F-prot server and awaits server response. Connection is not established. Attempt does not time out and must be killed (CTRL-C). My router lights flash a few times initially but no further activity.

Strange Pmount GUI behavior
I am booting 404 from CD with a pup_save on flash.
Pmount's device list is re-arranged the first time a device is mounted. If this is intentional, it's confusing and inconsistent. I don't observe this behavior under Puppy 400.
- The floppy drive initially appears below the HD parts. Mount any HD part and the floppy moves to the top of the list.
- The CD drive initially appears at the bottom of the list. Mount the CD drive and it moves to the top of the list.
I've not exhaustively tested every mount permutation but this GUI behavior is rather disconcerting.

Maximum resolution remains at 800x600 with this i810-based box with either Xorg or xvesa. Show stopper. Still.

PETget not connecting to servers
PETget in 404 appears unable to connect to any server while seeking software in either Puppy4 or Puppy3 repositories (didn't try Puppy2).
Network is otherwise functional.
Note also that the PETget GUI hangs during the connection process. This can confuse, as no status or feedback is provided.

Excessive CD spin-up at boot
Puppy 4 and all alphas spin my NEC CD/DVD drive to maximum RPM at boot. This is noisy, annoying and makes for a rather bad first impression of the Pup.
Booting Puppy 2.17, my drive makes little noise. Booting Puppy 3.01, Ubuntu, Mint, PCLOS etc., the drive is completely silent. The same CD media in all cases.
Update: I've discovered that not only is this spin-up behavior Puppy version dependent, it is CD media dependent. Booting Puppy 404 from a newer 24x Memorex CD-RW, the drive remains very quiet. The problem thus appears, content, media and very likely drive dependent.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior.?

Looks faster but first time boot Live CD, takes long time to copy to RAM.
Can you also show less progs in the main menu.
(move advanced progs in a special "advanced menu")
Also would be nice to open mp4 and 3gp files as video.

still no i810 driver
My Dell laptop needs a "real" i810 xorg driver to display its native 1024x768 like was in Puppy 3.1.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2008-07-17 15:46 i810_drv.so -> intel_drv.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 307156 2007-11-28 20:42 intel_drv.so
The current i810_drv.so is a symlink to the intel driver which simply does not work at any resolution with xorg on this machine.
With xvesa, only 640x480 resolution is available and Puppy is virtually unusable at that resolution since many windows don't have slider bars.
My (and others) workaround is to copy the i810 driver from Puppy 3.1 but with a future kernel that may not work anymore.
Barry, can this be fixed?

Wireless Wizard Fails
Everything works fine in 4.00; finds belkin pcmia card and assigns ath_pci, scans networks, connects, and configures. Oddly I have two Blinkies, ath0 and wifi0
4.04 assigned different driver ath5K_pci, I think, to wlan0. Went to wireless and scanned. No Networks Found. Rebooted into 4.00, 4 networks are availale.
As I recall the 2.6.25 version of 400 did not configure wifi either.
