Puppylinux Foundation Website available for testing

#1 Post by puppian »

Two sites for puppy have been set up for testing with the kind help and webspace from Raffy :) (tests are not done at puppylinux.org as most cms installation require database). Please test them and say what you think.

http://stet-vip.net/puppian/cmsimple/
Click "Login" in the left pane. Then type the password "fans" in the window pops up.

This cms is called CMSimple, and it's very small (58k compressed) and easy to use. Once login, you can edit any page when you're viewing it.

To create a new page, just edit any existing page and add the name of your new page at the end. Then, highlight that newly added line and click the H1 button (for sub-menu click H2 or H3). Finally click the 'save' button and the link to your new page will appear in the left pane. Multiple pages can be created at one time using this method.
To delete a page, edit it and delete everything in it, then click 'save'. Must read:
Writing your first pages
How to do common task
Rating and reviews

================================
http://stet-vip.net/puppian/
This one is called iWare, also very simple and easy to use (247k compressed). I can't get the WYSIWYG editor to work in Mozilla however (working in firefox thou).
It has user group management as well.

Login: http://www.stet-vip.net/puppian/admin/
Users login:
Name - puppy
Password - fans
Admin login:
Name - admin
Password - setup

Feature List | Homepage

The look of both sites can be changed easily with templates/skins, so it doesn't matter if you don't like the design now. The links and content you now see are for demostration purpose only and are subject to changes.

IMO both cms listed above are great, but please note that as they are simple, some useful features may not be available (e.g, shopping cart, multi-lingual support, wiki awareness, export of files to other formats, etc.). I'm trying a few others as well, will keep you informed :D

And here are jcagle's sites based on phpwcms (another cms):

Nice work there, Puppian, you're really up 24 hours everyday

It will be useful to try the collaborative features of each CMS, something like one person oversees one section and others submit changes/additions.

Cheers!

Test cmsimple - great!

#5 Post by PeterSieg »

Hi. just did a test ride on the cmsimple site. I like it! Simple but good.

But the question is, what are the plans with it...?
We should make sure, that we have ONE central place (probably mirrored),
for this informations! I don't like the idea, to have the information in small pieces lying around on several sites with probably different versions etc. :(

I also think there should be a howto section, were all finalized howtos from
the wiki should be placed!

PS
Have fun :)

Hi Peter,
PeterSieg wrote:what are the plans with it...?
It seems to me that we would have puppylinux.org as the "headquarters for the Puppy Foundation, the main site for Puppy users, with links, documentation, wiki, lots more stuff", while pupweb.org will be maintained by Barry, "oriented to developers and experimenters", with these pages: Developer News, Download Puppy and Buy Puppy CDs (quoted from http://pupweb.org ) :)

Has added a section called Featured wiki pages to http://stet-vip.net/puppian/cmsimple/ ;)

Btw, unlike iware, cmsimple doesn't require a database.

That's a great idea :)
I suggest raffy to oversee the Foundation and Contact Us sections, Lobster to oversee the Featured Wiki Pages and the Community sections :D

Those are really nice howto that you've put up! They're nice stuff that's been buried in the forum :)
How about setting up those pages in the wiki and then have links to them in the Featured Wiki Pages section? That will help keeping the site organized, easier to managed and avoid duplication with the Documentation section.
Maybe you would like to oversee that section together with Lobster too?

Hi. The linktowiki answers with an error message..?

If there is one section called Howtos or similiar (like I did today), I am willing to keep that updated... But than, I should be clear that there isn't any
other page offering same/similiar info's and we are just doublicating work..

I also miss such a clear howto section on the wiki.. so is the wiki a better
place for such howtos..?

To my it is still not clear, where should one go to find what information...
And I don't like having some here and some there...

I think we need a howto section! As you said right... the info's are buried in the forum...

Still the forum howto section is VERY valuable! Here a howto develops as users respond and its gets to a howto state...

But when 'done', the result should be copied to the howto section!!!
That is, what I could do... Either here or there - but in one place..

I like the view and structure of cmsimple better than the wiki!

PS
Have fun :)

If only links from wiki are put there, there won't be duplication. The documentation would only consist of the most neccesary documents. I prefer links to wiki because those 'mini-howtos' will have a lot of pages soon (we have so many great how-to emerging in this forum everyday) and will probably cluter up the site :)
To my understanding Wiki is intended for user's contribution while puppylinux.org is the main site for Puppy users and headquarters for the Puppy Foundation and is maintained by the foundation. Btw, maybe you would like to join the documentation committee on this page
PeterSieg wrote:I also miss such a clear howto section on the wiki.. so is the wiki a better place for such howtos..?
We don't have the great pages that you have set up in the wiki, so that's why I suggested you start the pages there first :)
After that those pages can be put in the Using Puppy section, Hardware section, Advance Topics section, or other sections that you think appropriate, of this page:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SiteMap
Or you can add a sub-section called 'mini-howtos' to those sections, it's just a matter of naming.

It seems to me that what most people are doing now is coping them to the wiki :)

Has set up the wiki page and links, please check the page again :)

Changed wiki to introduce howto section

OK - done.
I have placed a howto link in the front page.
The howto page is edited to have some structure with topics and links to
subpages...

Have I look and let me know...

#14 Post by raffy »

One question that comes to mind is, where is it easier to do page formatting, especially with advanced page layout such as tables (for illustration and text that go side-by-side, for example)?

And in terms of security (the page being unavailable for editing on whim), there may be a plus for plain HTML page?

These are just example issues, I guess

Of course, the wiki page can link to the CMS page, and vice-versa, with the understanding that one is more "final" than the other...

Very nice 8)

In fact I think I misunderstood what you mean by 'how-tos' a bit. I thought almost all pages in the wiki now are how-tos, but what you really mean is 'how to do things in Puppy'. The section 'Advance' under 'Documentation' is in fact for such things :) (it won't be a very large section thou, not to clutter up the site ;))
raffy wrote:And in terms of security (the page being unavailable for editing on whim), there may be a plus for plain HTML page?
That's an important thing you've brought up raffy :) Have sent you a pm about this ;)

As to page formatting, CMSimple comes with it's own WYSIWYG editors, but it also offers an option to install other editors (TinyMCE 1.44, HTMLArea 3.0-rc1 and FCKeditor 2):
http://www.cmsimple.dk/?Downloads:External_editors
I don't know which one is better, what do you think?

One thing I like about CMSimple is that it allows you to add scripts to your content pages.
http://www.cmsimple.dk/?Installer%27s_M ... _Scripting
So others like Pizzasgood who know php can help to add other features when needed.

And here are some addons and plugins (no scripting needed to install):
http://www.cmsimple.dk/?Addons_and_plugins

Btw, it seems that CMSimiple has better support. They have a vivid forum. I had tried to solve the WYSIWYG editor problem of iWare. I searched their site and forum but can't find what I want (I can't even find the answer to the question "how do I switch to another pre-installed editor after installation")...

And here is another CMS (called php-fusion) to test for:
http://stet-vip.net/puppian/phpfusion/php-files/
Users login:
Name - puppy
Password - puppyfans
Admin login:
Name - admin
Password - adminpass
(User's posting won't show up immediately. It'll only be shown after admin approval, but I guess that can be changed in the admin panel..)

Homepage: http://www.php-fusion.co.uk/

I think this will be the last one we'll be testing :) Others are too complex and some even can't be installed successfully...

Here, I will be my usual helpful self and make a request ... making this post of newfound value! ;-)

This page is blank:
http://stet-vip.net/puppian/cmsimple/?I ... Hard-drive

While the page is being populated could someone include clear instructions for upgrading from version to version for we limited-of-clue folks, please?

Upgrading from Puppy 1.0.4 to 1.0.5 is not intuitive at all.

One inserts the 1.0.5 ISO CD and selects HDD, then chooses pup002 instead of pup001 in order to not wipe out Puppy 1.0.4 until satisfied with 1.0.5 or 1.0.6 or whatever.

The problem is that when I boot it does not see Pup002 with 1.0.5 and I do not see instructions anywhere obvious to fix this problem.

Yes, I do want to help build the instructions and will be sure to post a paint-by-numbers FAQ once I know how to do this and do it myself so I can explain it to another upgrade-challenged user. ;-)

Thanks! doc

We also need to coordinate with the documentation included with Puppy. For example, we currently have the HTML pages available under the Help menu selection, and should start an Installation Guide for users to refer to that are using the LiveCD but don't have Internet access yet. So, we have the Puppy Help pages, the Wiki pages, forum topics, and Barry's web pages being used for documentation. Lots more to do, eh?

Instructions for upgrading are surely needed :) I don't know much about that and it's great to know you're writing a FAQ 8)

Test site has been updated to show how different content from different hosts can be kept a standard look easily, as suggested by many others, with tools like Php-fusion :)

Downloads (dotpups, pawed casts, puplets, iso, etc) - click on links like "Download (57022 KB)" to get the idea. Files are hosted somewhere else, but the link won't show it.

Gallery (wallpaper, images, etc)

Weblinks (links to puplets, community sites, etc)

Btw, I propose raffy to be our chief website administrator.

PS. As mentioned before, the look of the site can be changed easily, e.g, two columns can be used instead of three; Shoutbox, Member Poll, etc can be set as not shown...
