Alpha 6 is on the front page at http://www.puppylinux.ca

Conservative iso has a good md5sum

Eric

Sage..sorry for the long links..I'll just use my front page. My file manager doesn't handle long file names well thus it looks a mess.

Iso from Eric was broken so i took iso from ibilio.
Murga forum seems broken too...

Connection wizard complicated for newbies.
Some files called NOTUSED
Devices in /dev/ for dvb tuner not created automatically.

Harder to find bugs now ? :)

What about including SDL and OpenAL and DRI on by default ?

petget connection failure - and fix

#7 Post by dogone »

Problem:
Alpha 6 appeared to be working splendidly, but I was seeing the very same petget connection problem I experienced in Alpha 5. Petget appeared to establish a connection with the server but never managed to initiate or complete the download. It simply and repeatedly timed out and retried. Mind you, network connectivity was otherwise fast and flawless.

My computer connects to Qwest DSL via an Actiontec DSL modem configured for DHCP. I access the Actiontech via a gateway, a Linksys router. The details are immaterial to Puppy. The Connection Wizard sees my NIC, which sees the Linksys, which finds and Actiontec. Getting on-line is a cinch.

Now some time back, probably just after I began booting Puppy 4.1 alpha 5, I switched from fixed IP addresses to DHCP. I simply re-configured my DSL modem, rebooted it and rebooted Puppy. I did *not* reboot the Linksys gateway. Soon afterwards I noticed that petget could no longer establish a connection and execute a download.

Resolution:
I rebooted the Linksys gateway. Petget immediately started working again. So, for the log book, something about the Linksys getting out of sync with the Actiontec caused petget to fail, when every other network dependent aspect of Puppy worked perfectly.

It's little wonder no one else has experienced this problem, however it is perfectly possible that the same or a similar problem could again arise with petget.

Pburn 1.9.8 failure at start of iso burn

#8 Post by dogone »

* Update: The following is corrected in Pburn 1.9.9.

Pburn 1.98 in Puppy alpha 6 is failing during preparations for a .iso file burn with an error from wodim.

The last line in pburn.log is:

wodim: No such file or directory. Cannot open ''.

Repeating the attempt and inspecting the burn command, I find:

wodim -multi -tao -v dev=/dev/sr0 driveropts=burnfree ""

Adding a fully qualified path and file name between the double quotes results in a successful burn. So, Pburn is not passing the .iso file name to wodim.

Live CD won't eject, I thought this problem had been fixed
some alphas' back.

With the live CD loaded and the cd icon at bottom of screen
showing mounted, also with ' pmount ' open shows the cd mounted,
then with mouse over cd icon and right click to un-mount, that takes
place ok. Pmount shows as a still mounted cd. A refresh of pmount
clears that.

My problem is that I can't get the CD to pop out with a mechanical
action to the drive. CD is still locked in.

Is this a bug ?

"Wallpaper setter" not working for me
Noticed that too.
A solution for now, is to right click on lock (top right of desktop)
and select 'backdrop'

Another issue, with the standard version . .. .
On shutdown from a pristine CD boot
I decided to save, it allowed me to do this with a name
- then I got a kernel panic and a synch error message
Today I booted up and the save file was saved and available

Anyone else get this message?

A minor issue
I have been watching the Olympics from the BBC
(applies to all media watching though) and just when the latest
judoki has won and burst into tears, the screen saver goes on
During movie watching I also have to wiggle the mouse every 15 minutes . . .
Wot?
We don't actually need screen savers any more
- so could the default (it can be changed) be turned to off?
If not it can be altered manually with menu / Desktop / pupx

All of the above issues except no problem with CD eject. PMount is now extremely slow as is the liveCD boot up. Plenty of scope for tidying and size reduction - nice to have complex numbers for Argand diags, but four calculators seems excessive. The shutdown issue on SiS chipsets still evades the attention of Hr. Obermeister. Interestingly, though, the HD (Full install) now spins down at power off but the board still fails to stop.
Too busy with HW projects to test scsi yet.

Caneri: will you (or F.) please truncate your links which offend against the new ruling on sizing:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 827#223827
Thanks.

MUT

#12 Post by Lobster »

Hotpup worked for me (no extensive test) - I just plugged in and accessed some pics with a USB MD reader . . .

What part of MUT (which has been 'fixed') is in Puppy? No graphical interface as before. It just runs text from command line?

A follow up to CD eject problem and other observations.

Well this is a test run with using Live "CONSERVATIVE VERSION",
yes, and this is some what better I think!

I also noted when using the so called "NORMAL VERSION" that
my DVD icon did not show up at bottom just above task bar, but
in the conservative version the dvd was there.

I also note that the "pmount " window is a new version, with mounting/
unmounting at the cd icon worked a treat ! So mounting/unmounting
via "pmount" worked. and yes out popped the CD! Great!

My question now- should I do a HARD DRIVE upgrade from
Alpha5 to this Alpha6 without a loss of goodies I got in A5 ?

Could not get a good md5sum download from ibiblio in two tries, succeeded first try from the Australian mirror. This mirror delivered at ~ 25 kbps, without coblitz or any other acceleration. Not bad for such a faraway server on this nominal-51.2 (lucky if 38.4) adsl line.

No problem with live CD, but I forget whether I manually ejected or it auto-ejected. Live-CD boot was not slow.

Using as a frugal install on Gabrielle (dual-P3-600), with the scsi-1 kernel installed but booted and running from an ata drive.

No kernel panic nor sync error message upon first shutdown of the frugal (i.e. creation of the pup_save, I did not create one when I shut down the live-CD). Shutdown went OK and it powers off OK on this machine.

Same problem here with the inoperative background setter.

PMount has not slowed down as far as startup speed, but has slowed down in the speed with which it mounts/unmounts, since 4.1-alpha-5. Rox feels subjectively slower at opening folders than in alpha-5.

PETget works, but takes a looo-ooo-ng time to start wget'ting. Doesn't make any difference whether from ibiblio or nluug. This is through a local proxy with fixed IP, and /etc/wgetrc has the proxy info edited in.

PETget works
Smokey (Grant) who works on PSIP mentioned that
Petget has never worked for him - ever.
I was surprised
Being slow (that is a server thing) is one thing
not working is more serious.

I tend to use these which work in 4.00 and should be OK
for 4.1

My next test it to get it working on the Eeepc - which will check out the Universal Installer and if I am lucky the wifi might work - with Atheros drivers in there - claws crossed . . .

Also if you have newer Eeepc - get your tests in now
Barry is supporting these and Classmates - so give feedback

I downloaded 4.1a6 from http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/puppylinux/ in Australia, very fast as I'm in Australia only took a couple of minutes.

Burned iso, booted, all worked well up to selecting the keyboard then it did not appear to be recognising the keyboard.

I could not get the keyboard to work. This is the only puppy that I have tried that did not work on the first attempt.

I checked the checksum and it matched.

I downloaded the normal distro.

Anyone else had this problem?

Here's some alpha6 feedback:

- The new brown theme was very nice. Also jcoder24 has made a beautiful 'winter' jwm-theme.
- Wallpaper app failed to start.
- xsane don't support my epson perfection 2400 photo. Output in terminal are just: 'segmentation fault'. It didn't work in Puppy 4.00 either, but works just fine in Puppy 3.01.
- file extension *.flv should be linked to Gxine.
- file extension *.m3u should be linked to Pmusic.
- Maybe *.mp3 *.ogg *.wav should be moved from Gxine to Pmusic ???
- Pfind should be using Pmusic as default music player, and fotoxx as default image-viewer (ok, that's my task :) ) fotoxx misses a parameter to start slideshow. New release available
- Menu icons for 'Figaros password manager' and 'GWhere' are not 16x16 pixels.
- Install *.pet when filename (path) has spaces fails.
- Pburn are still buggy: Dogbone has noted one bug. Also Burn iso and add selection from search-field doesn't work. Version 1.9.9 is released.
- Your workaround for gtkfilelogviewer works excellent.
- I'm happy to see the 'show desktop' button again.
- The release notes could tell that Pmusic is a new Puppy app.

The slowness in PETget is not a server thing; once wget-in-orange starts, it connects to the ibiblio or nluug server and commences the download speedily. The slowness comes before that. Between the time I click on a package-name and the time wget comes up is, like, two or three or four minutes. Eternity.

Never had a problem with my keyboard, a plain Dell QuietKey ps2.

I agree there are too many calculators. And application menu can be simplified.

Some icons missing in ayttm (menu edit etc)
(ayttm:26327): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading icon: Failed to open file '/usr/share/pixmaps/group-chat.png': No such file or directory
